Guys, I purchased a '72 Colony Park recently and want to get the headlight doors adjusted properly so the moulding lines up right. Any ideas if these doors are adjustable and how to do it? The passenger side is certainly worst than the drivers side but both need to be fine tuned.
Looking at the far right picture, the Driver's side looks fine, but the other pic of that same one is high in the center, near the grille. Then the passenger side is high at the grille as well. Yes, there are adjustments. The pivot points in behind the covers may have worn out pins. But the fact that they're almost angled the same way, makes it look like the grille's frame may be the real place to look, if the hood is not even where the cowl and hood meet up. If that's ok, then you just have to dismantle the light brackets and see if the pivot pins aren't badly worn, and then align the light brackets to get the desired spacing. You might be able to access the adjustments from under the hood/rad cowl to drop them about 1/8" to 3/16" on the inside angles. If the valve motor arms are worn out, usually on the fender side, then you could try to get replacements or drill a larger hole and use a bigger pivot pin.
Sorry I'm no help but I love that car. Quite classy I must say. Oh it's a Mercury! No wonder I like it. What's that song? "Gotta have a Mercury"?
Didn't the small 1981 T-birds have them? Andy just found one (2-door) locally that is being sold as a running car or parts car.
I had that same issue on a old 67 Cougar I once owned. I wedged a penny between the body and the headlamp door so it would mesh with the grille lines like it was supposed to.
"Mercury Blues" By Alan Jackson is I beleive the one you're thinking of. Thought you would enjoy the video as well, it's good song and vid.
Today, I was finally at a point with the interior redo that I was able to take a look at the headlight doors and their adjustment. I was able to make a small adjustment with the moulding at the bottom of the doors as well as adjust the bolt stop. After pulling out the grill I learned that a rod runs horizontal, connecting the two headlight doors together, actuated by a single vacuum module mounted behind the center of the front bumper. After looking further, it seems the headlight door alignment problem is due to excess play in the coupler between rod and the passenger side headlight door. The amount of play at the coupler is minor, however becomes exaggerated at the door. I'm thinking the play is so minor that it can't be shimmed out, however I'm also thinking a spot weld between these two parts might just work. I expect to have the interior finished last next week, and than, run the car over to a local body shop that I use, to see what they can do.
