Who could believe this 40 year old econobox could now be collectible? https://www.ebay.com/itm/224359695980
Who could believe a 40 year old Escort with 47k miles would be so well preserved ? It looks brand new.
With the prices we’ve seen on some of these cars $$3,100 isn’t bad. Wonder if this will go north of $5-6
When I was growing up, the family behind us (who had kids the same age as me) always had to have the latest of everything. Well, when these first came out, they bought a twin to this wagon. I remember it seemed so modern at the time. I still like these early first gen Escorts. I think '81 is the only year for the fender "world car" emblem. But man, make sure the timing belt is replaced early and often.
a few things: I kind of like it. Car looks in great shape inside and out realizing a 1981 car is 40 years old, makes me feel old
I agree Mark. I grew up in the 80's. I never thought I would feel the slightest bit of nostalgia towards the decade and the things that it produced. I was into the 50's and the 60's and the times prior to that. But certainly not the 80's. Well... Somehow, unexpectedly, within the last year or two I have found myself feeling increasingly nostalgic about the 80's And now I see cars like this and I think "Wow. That's a clean car. Would be fun to have that"
It is well preserved, I find it hard to believe that someone actually used up valuable garage space for 40 years to preserve that car, but my the looks of the paint and the red interior plastic someone did. If it were Japanese it would sell for $30,000 or more. It will be interesting to see what it bids to, and if it meets its reserve.
It would be incredibly cool to have this one..... Ad is a bit lacking. Doesn't mention much at all about the equipment. Being an original Arizona car, it's probably got A/C, but I'm not sure. (It was available....) 1981 was the year we bought our first house, and in the driveway at that time would have been our '79 Toyota pickup and my company car, a 1980 Pontiac Phoenix......
See these were just so underpowered and gutless when new I can't imagine anyone actually wanting one today!
Does have AC. I used to have a friend in Chicago that had a Vega with AC. He would turn it on max at a stop light and when the light went green he could red line it and it would just creep away from the light. He would say you could have ac or go power, just not at the same time.
Ha. A/C in one of those was a *baaaaad* idea. My Aunt Terrie had a Lynx, '83 IIRC, and she said, even going downhill, you turned on the A/C, it lost power in a major way!
You are not alone. Probably 15-20 years older than you and was always into 50s and 60s and early 70s cars, movies and music. Thought the 80s were blah, had no character. What started to change my mind was when we were at some local get together two or three years ago and an 80 something El Camino parked next to our 87 Safari and a Monte Carlo parked by the El Camino. Gotta tell ya, those squared off GM front ends with the rectangular headlights had some presence and those three cars got some looks. I know my 87 can't hold a candle to many 60s cars in performance but IMO it does not have to apologize to anybody when it comes to style.
1986 until recent history was one of the largest sales years on record for cars and light trucks. Nearly 16 million units. I for one did my share with a new ‘86 Grand Marquis. And that passed the 1985 record by nearly 600,000 units. I for one like the 1980’s cars from all divisions. Especially the square panther body Ford’s and their GM counterparts. I have an ‘86 Grand Marquis now that I love driving. The ‘70’s Cars were luxo barges no doubt. But the 1980’s cars really seemed right sized, especially in the big car lines. You had room, good highway performance, relatively , and a lot of good options. I also think the 1980’s were now in retrospect a very soothing time. Oh sure one could argue about the times. But that’s not for this forum. I think 1980’s cars will be fondly remembered, and as an aside I have an ‘83 Colony Park with a Reagan/Bush ‘84 bumper sticker. When I get thumbs up in traffic I often wonder is it for the Colony Park, or are people nostalgic for a time gone by.
