July 1912...Engine 989 waits patiently for riders to return to Fabyans. This engine with its passenger cars would pick up people at Fabyans who wanted to go to take the cogs to the top of Mt. Washington. Then it would wait for returning riders, and bring them back to Fabyans. In this photo you can see 4 cogs going up Mt. Washington, and one waiting to go. Photo from the Robert J. It's a GM Aerotrain locomotive. Here's the Wiki page on the Aerotrain: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aerotrain_(GM) Essentially, the design idea was a very lightweight passenger train, to replace heavier-duty equipment in corridors that were losing money. The 'cars' were actually GM bus bodies, sufficiently widened to cover the running gear. And yes, because it came fron General Motors, car designers worked on the locomotive's carbody shape.
