Nice colors. How's the market, for one of those? You think, he'll get rid of it, at that price? 3 hinges?! What does that car even weigh? It's known that they weren't light
That beast tips the scales at nearly 5000 lbs. Mark IIIs are not hard to find, but the factory sunroof was a very rare option, as noted. That and the color combination would be the draw on this one. I don't know that he will get his price, but I can't say that it is not worth what he is asking. It looks like showroom condition.
Yes, this car is immaculate, almost better than showroom. I was not aware of the extra door hinge on these, never noticed it on the ones I saw back in the day.
Three hinges. Check out this video at the 2:00 minute mark. Keep in mind that everything about these cars was heavy. Gas was cheap in the day and no one cared about economy, especially if you were buying a luxury car.
Did Lincoln offer a cassette player in the radio in '71? I though you could only get the 8-track until '74 or '75?
Yeah it really is a nice one. The sun roof is what drives it up. Those are factory wheels, but not for that year. I think you could get the hurricane wheel covers through the dealer in ‘71, but I think the only wheel covers truly available were those two piece bladed wheel cover. Great color combo.
So was steel. Especially, for FoMoCo, since they had their own steel mill. Therefore, bean counters didn't bother with having parts trimmed and using expensive lighter alloys. I guess, it wasn't even important for Ford that the lighter luxury cars from the other two could get out of their own way better. The Big Three made most of their profits from luxury cars and their options, anyway
Well they demonized McNamara (MAC the knife) while he was at Ford cause he consolidated the divisions after 1960, was responsible for the 4 seat bird, and a lot of the hardliners weren’t exactly excited about the Falcon project that he initiated. I think he might have been a bit of a fudge up at the defense department, but he sure had an eye for a dollar saving at Ford. I think to your point PI, after Duce got fat and cranky and they brought in Bunky from Pontiac, skipping over Iococa, they got bloated again. Knudsen really was a big thrust behind the Mark III, and the big snooted T-Birds, as well as the long nosed ‘71-‘72 designs on the big Fords. I couldn’t imagine how it was being at any of the big three, post 1970 when Uncle was throwing curveballs, and the imports were eating your lunch on the other side.
I think this one is better. Like the color combo, leather, low mileage, plus this one has got correct wheel covers, and clean front end minus non correct hood ornament. This just has the feel of a good original car.
Not sure about all of the 50th anniversary stuff. Lincoln founded in 1917, Ford purchased in 1922, and the first real Continental 1941, so don’t by all that anniversary jazz. That’s like when I look at a ‘64 Mercury or a ‘64 Dodge add, and they say “rare 25th or rare 50th anniversary” edition. They all say that on the steering wheel.
BTW jwdtenn, you really do an amazing effort finding all these various vehicles, and posting them. Cudos for all of your gumshoeing on tracking these interesting autos down!
