Hi My recently bought 1987 Buick LeSabre Estate Wagon have some weird thingy below the steering wheel. Its a push button with a key lock to release the button. I have the key and on it it says Concord Security Lock. So yeah I figured out it has something to do with security! Looked in the shop manual and unfortunately I could not find any information. Also searched on internet and getting everything that does not point me in a good direction (internet was not invented 1987 at least not Google). I am not able to ask the first and only owner. Maybe he is replying but I can't seem to hear him... So my first question is this factory installed? What does it do? This question does sound stupid but its the technical I would like to know. Like which systems is blocked if the button is pressed? Does anybody has some good schematics or can point me towards it? Is it possible to make a copy of the key as I only have one? Thanks,
I have a cable lock which uses a similar key. That's the only kind that I've never been able to have copied
My work van has a lock box between the seats that uses the same style key and lock set up, and it only had the one key. 1st locksmith I took it to ( a real locksmith, not the kid at the hardware store) , they cut me a new key while I waited. As for what the lock is there for, that's almost impossible to say. That would be something you will have to trace.........
This is an aftermarket system that locks the hood and disables the ignition. Used to be popular in the 1970s and 80s. Open the hood and you should see some sort of cable operated dead bolt that locks the hood. See if it also disables the starer or ignition circuits.
Here's an example of one such lock kit available today. This is what the dead bolt under the hood typically looks like.
WTF is the issue with this website. The second photo shows up when I edit the above post, but I just get the red "X" when I save the changes.
I can see the lock thing and below is a red X like for another photo. I've never seen a safety lock like that. Must be for a high crime area. My 1939 Ford has a switch and lock to lock the steering wheel, much like some motorcycles had.
This is weird. I got Joe's post showing up, in my e-mail account. But, when I tune into the forum, the post isn't even there and there's no second page, either. Now, mine are also X-ed. They appear, when I use the edit function: https://s18.postimg.org/laoqabkjt/JP_WTF_X_2.jpg https://s18.postimg.org/laoqa8s8p/JP_WTF_X.jpg
C’mon Ivy!! This problem is right there in your wheelhouse! You mean between you and the rest of your top secret spy buddies following you in that big white van, y’all can’t figure this one out??
We did. We're just sitting back in the van, popping our corn and corks, waiting for the flaming to start
Thanks for all input. Joe, you were completely correct its a hood locking device. Mine is not connected to the ignition so only the hood is locked. The car was originally registered and used in New York. I don't know if Mid Long Island is a high crime area, but the owner really cared for the car. He owned it for 30 years and its free of rust and has low mileage. Unfortunately he did scrape the side in the garage. I'm fixing that now. Here are pictures from inside the engine bay and inside of the hood. Please excuse the ice...
Cool, thanks. That's essentially the photo I unsuccessfully tried to post. These were quite popular additions in the Boston area in the 70s. My sister installed one on her brand new Omni. Hers had the starter disable feature, which would have been worthless without the hood lock part.
