Actually I've gotten most of mine at the car swap meets. Probably the same stuff auto parts stores have. I even added "fake" wood to my Dodge truck dash and it remained the ten years I had the truck. I'd say make sure the vehicle is clean and the weather warm. Maybe not out in the hot sun either.
Most of the trim on late model cars is vinyl and is held on with adhesive tape. The chrome on those aftermarket strips is mylar which will degrade before the strip fails.
Decals will eventually bake on and will get difficult to remove. While removing them, care has to be taken not to excessively heat the entire surface. Otherwise, you could damage the paint. Powder coating is even more sensitive. Using a hot air gun will melt the coating, if you're not careful
For decal and sticker removal, I hang a towel over the area, then pass a clothes iron over the area until it can be peeled. Once cooled, follow up with a quick wiping of Goo-Gone or Goof-Off, then wash the area to remove the oil from the stick-um remover.
Goof-Off? I've never heard of that before. Sounds like another name for what they used to call "Rush" or maybe a scent women would put on, to ward off over-confident bar flies. If you use a clothes iron, you'd might want to wet the towel first or maybe borrow your neighbors neglige' from a nearby clothesline or use some similar thin cloth and the break out a steam iron. Steam carries over an enormous amount of heat, compared to hot air. Steam from an iron will not superheat like a hot air gun will tend to do
I bought some of that peel n stick chrome molding from JC Whitney, for a 1984 Chevy Silverado. That was twenty five years ago. I sold the truck twenty years ago locally and it's still in the area behind some guys barn. To get to the point, every time I go by the place wishing I still had that truck, the molding is still hanging in there??....Longroofs Rule!
I'd look straight ahead, while driving by, if I were you. Otherwise, sooner or later, we might not be reading from you, for awhile, because you got caught helping yourself to that truck you once owned. Well, then again, maybe you won't get caught
Nothing wrong with plastic chrome trim. Your car will be at the scrap yard before that 3m tape fails. Proper surface prep is the key.
Sorry no brands to recommend. Just find one you like with good 3m tape. I've hooked into some black moldings for my bumpers. I will be doing the install at some point. 1977 mercury colony parks come with or without. I like the with.
