The stock 390 in my 68' Ford Country squire is locked up solid.. I got a 69' 429 in good shape and was told it would bolt right in, and have already bought mucho parts for it. Now I learn the motor mounts need to be changed or adapted so the 429 wont sit too high and the C6 will clear the trans. tunnel. Also learned the original C6 bolted to the stock 390 wont work with the 429, I have to get a C6 that came with a 429/460, and one guy said to find one without re-enforcing ribs on the bell housing again for trans. tunnel clearance. I found a co. online called Crites in Ohio that specializes in Ford engine swap adaptations.. will call them on 8/7/17 hoping they can help

Yes thank you PI that's right, I found one posting online about a way to drill these and adapt to the 429/460 block but the instructions were very vague and unclear.. don't want to destroy the originals. At my work (manufacturing plant) I can easily have any thickness steel custom cut, welded, machined, etc. its the rubber part that's the holdup, I will not use solid mounts..
PI I owe you one friend, I found a picture on the how to site link you sent of the transmission I need.. a C6 from a 429/460. Ford made three diff. C6's and now I have a good picture of the one that will work for me hopefully. Thanks again, I am hoping to hear from a fellow member on SWF's who may have installed a 429/460 in a 68' wagon like mine.. surely someone has!
I'm sure, the 429 series was an option, in 1968. It used to be easy just to go into some auto parts store and get the mounts you needed. If they didn't have any on the shelf, they'd show up shortly. In a worse case scenario, a dealer would have them. This is all new to me, because I only did these things with GMs which are essentially a piece of cake, in comparisson. You might want to keep in mind bolting up a beefed-up c-4, if you're worried about tunnel clearance.
I am a Chevy guy doing my first Ford build so this is new to me too. The guy on the how to link was an encyclopedia of Ford knowledge and wrote that a beefed up 429/460 would quickly destroy a C4.. (stock engine ok) my plan is a Comp cams big mutha thumper cam, headers and exhaust cut outs for parking lot burnouts, cruising, and car show, rat rod fun. I am about 1.5 hours from Pigeon Forge TN (huge rod runs twice a year) and here in southeast TN car shows happen somewhere every weekend all summer long. I do wish Ford parts availibility was as easy as Chevy in the old days, your right about what you wrote.
They were probably just as available. The only difference was that GMs standardized everything. Intentional or not, this kept inventories to a reasonable minimum. Then again, when it boils down to it, Ford used the same basic engines for two of their divisions plus their truck line, while Lincoln ended up having their own, with the Mercury's ending up as Fords with different skins. GMs used only one basic 3-speed automatic which would bolt up to 4 different V-8's of identicle bolt pattern and the same trannie for a Chevy bolt pattern. When you do the math, GM had to stock about as many parts as Ford. Only, for differing reasons.
I HIGHLY suggest you do what I did if you have fab access. Figure out a way to install 2 bolts (countersink if need be) thru each motor mount. If your going to "do a few burn outs" and such they are going to break. They always do, not right away but they do.
