Hello All! I recently picked up a 1968 Mercury Commuter wagon from a barn. This is an original 32k mile wagon with a 390 motor. My problem is that the car was purchased without keys. The doors are unlocked, but the rear is locked. Is it possible to unlock the rear door without the key? I do not see any lock latch. Thanks for any help.
That should be possible, either through prying it off with an appropriate tool or through unscrewing the bolts which attach the door assembly to the body. The tools used for prying off door panels usually are double-sided. The opposite side being used for shoving off the clips holding the window cranks in place:
If it's a unit with the dual-facing rear seats, it's GOT to have a unkock knob on the tail gate somewhere.
If the doors are unlocked, pull one of the door lock cylinders. There may be a code stamped on the outside, allowing a new key to be made.
That, or the tumblers can be pulled to discern what cuts a key gets. When I bought my '77 Datsun wagon, it didn't have an ignition lock cylinder, so, no key; the locksmith made a skeleton key, which I used at the old Pull-a-Part to get a lock cylinder assembly.
Another great idea. Do you think a key can be made from the ignition cylinder? That would be the easiest to pull.
I have no idea how to pull the rear door cylinder with the door locked. Might have to pull a door lock and hope to get a key made from that. Thanks!
If I pull the ignition, I can replace it fairly inexpensively. The problem is the doors and the tailgate. Would there be a code on the door lock mechanism?
