Ok everybody, this is the ordeal, this last sunday I pulled a 1974 dodge coronet custom 9 passenger wagon from out of a pole barn, this car has been sitting since the late 80s. This car is confusing me, it has a lot of options on it, but the one that is really getting to me is the P in the vin. Which means 400 HP. Ive tried looking all over the web and can not find any info on this car and its 400 HP motor. Still has the factory duel exhaust and heavy duty drive line. What Im asking is there anybody out there that can help me find out how many were built, and what it could be worth. Any info would help on this cool old wagon. Thanks!!!!
Mate , I could be wrong as I have not been on SWF for sometime , maybe you need to go to first from Downunder
Let me start by saying that I am not an expert at decoding VIN#'s but it likely has a 400 cubic inch engine with the HP option. High performance., likely a 4 barrel engine. The 400 cubic inch motor is a big block engine. The Chrysler, Dodge, and Plymouth big block engines came in several different displacements and there was a low deck 361, 383 & 400. Also a raised deck 413, 426 wedge - not the 426 Hemi and the 440. Based on what you have said it is a 400 cubic inch engine. Pictures would help.
Will try to get some pics posted soon. The 5th digit in the vin is a p, and that stands for HP 400. It just threw me for a loop because 1974 was during the oil embargo. All the options on this car plus the hp 400 just seems strange. For all the options on this car wouldnt it have been cheaper to go with a C body wagon with the options? Been looking all over the web and can not find any info on 1974 B body wagons with a HP motor.
snsspringer I don't know if you officially introduced yourself so I'll just addand good luck on figuring out just what your wagon is. No matter what the codes are or the size of the engine size doesn't matter when you're having fun with an old station wagon.
'HP 400' does not mean 400 horsepower; rather, as LongroofSavoy has said, it's a 400 CID high performance engine. In my books, there are four 4-barrel 400 engines and are listed as follows: 200 HP @ 4400 and 310 LB-FT @ 2400 205 @ 4400 and 310 @ 2400 250 @4800 and 330 @ 3400 That's from my 1975 Motor book; the only difference between it and my 1975 Chilton book is that Chilton listed the 250 horse engine as the 'HP' engine.
I know its not 400 hp, thats not whats being asked, what im trying to figure out if there is any info out there on how many were built with said option.
There's a Mopar registry that would be able to decode your VIN and tell you how many other cars with the various options there were made. If one of the Mopar aficionados would pop up with that Info, that would be awesome.
