I've been told that some of the fully restored ones are hitting 6 figures... I can't believe it myself!

There is a guy here in OKC that has a beautifully-restored 21-window Bus he drives to various shows and events. He has it insured for $175K. He has been offered near that a few times, but says it is not for sale. Insane money for one of the slowest vehicles ever to go down a highway.

BTW, $32K in the current market is not out of line for the above yellow Bus. Looks like that is the price it went for just now. Wow.

I bought my first VW Bus in 1985. It was a 1964 bus and I paid $500 for it. I had seen it on the side of the road for sale for a while when I bought it. The guy was happy to finally be selling it. It was in pretty bad shape but drove and stopped. I did some work on it and sold it for $3000 in 1989. That was the beginning of the steady VW Bus price rise.

It's funny because when I bought that bus nobody wanted them. You practically couldn't give them away. Just four years later and the thing was worth way more than I paid for it. Now the things are going for insane amounts of money. I like them but I don't get why anyone would pay what they are paying in today's world.

I could drop the motor out of that bus in less than 15 minutes. I would have to manually adjust my brakes about once a month. It was 6 volt when I got it so I converted it to 12 volt. It was fun to work on but a little scary to drive on the freeway due to poor stopping ability. It was also fun to party in.

I had a '66 before that one but it was totaled while parked in front of my apartment. I had a Wolfsburg Edition Vanagon for a few years about 10 years ago. I sold it for more than I paid for it as well. The guy who bought it flew halfway across the country to buy it from me.

I think my VW bus days are over though. I like my '70 flat-top Cutlass Wagon that I have now way too much. I can't ever see myself getting rid of my wagon. Getting more wagons, yes. Getting rid of my current wagon, no. Maybe a 70's era domestic van (disco van) would be fun too.
