O'mega POS.... One of these dropped its transmission on my hand. I was cursing and yelling so loudly, my boss' brother-in-law comes running in, thinking that we'd gone to fisticuffs.
While I have never driven the Olds Version of the X-cars I spent many miles Driving Citations both I-4 and V-6 models (but no X/11's) and hated almost every moment of driving them! Several years ago I even test drove a low Mileage 82 Phoenix SJ, Every option, 4-speed manual H/O V-6, even had the rear spoiler and optional FWD Snowflake rims. I have never driven such notchy and vague shifter in my entire life! I really could not tell what gear the car was in when shifting. The handling was indifferent, that could have been caused by 30 year old shocks and tires. The braking was ho hum, and the small dealer that had it was asking $6800 at least twice what it was worth to me. I could not imagine paying more than a few hundred dollars for that Olds, it is in nice condition, low miles, no desirability or collectability in my opinion. I still have the Pic's of the SJ on my HD so I attached a few.
OK, something is fishy about this story! The buyers didn't even take the window sticker off the window after buying it for their ma/grandma? And they only put, let's say, 150 miles on the car while "keeping it going" for 28 years? And the seller only put 4 miles on it in 5 years? What, did he drive it across the street into his garage from the old woman's house? I'll bet the seller also has a bridge for sale, from NJ to NYC.
Astonishingly, up to $4,000! I'm curious about that driver's side cross brace being unbolted on the under hood photo.
Might have been swapping the battery....... My M-I-L had one of these as her last vehicle before she passed away. 4-cyl, not as much equipment as this one, but it did have the nicer Omega Brougham package - nicer seats than this one......
Ever hear of the "Iraqi Taxi" '81 Chevy Maibus built by GM, of which only half were delivered? http://www.curbsideclassic.com/blog/automotive-history-snapshot-1981-chevrolet-malibu-iraqi-taxi/ I would find a story about this Omega being a "never sold to a foreign government and found sitting in a warehouse" car more believable than the "little old lady who never drove it" car story. Aside: I worked with a woman who had one of these "Iraqi Taxis". Yes, it was a 3-speed manual. She got a good deal on it.
Back on eBay. Seller says reserve is $4k. Only 19 hours left on the auction, and bidding up to $3,705. I still don't believe it's legit. But what the heck. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Other-Makes...a9f279ac:g:C34AAOSwZjJU2ozn&item=131700259244
About the window sticker. A co-worker bought a new 1978 Red and White Ford supercab truck. When I saw it last a few years ago the window stickers were still on it.
Smells good or smells bad? If, like in the Stephen King book "Christine," that smell was good one time and bad another time.
The lower body fillers at the bumper ends went away at some point. Those never lasted long on any X-body. That same material was used on the bumper fillers on the full-sized GM cars; and they too, didn't last long. I'm not surprised they've decomposed on this, despite the mileage. I think that underhood bracket was loosened for a battery swap, too. I was working for a Chevy dealership when these came out in '79. The four-cylinder cars were relatively easy to work on, but the V-6 cars gained an evil notoriety, right off the bat. They're not ugly or ungainly cars, but they are not a car I wax nostalgic about, either.
