Boy, I loved that car! It was my first wagon back in the 60's I could roll down all the windows including the big one in the back and let my dogs poke their heads out. I went camping in that car and slept in the back very comfortably. I loved the radio - so simple to use. Car was easy to maneuver. There was just nothing like it and it was dependable. So now we have 3 wagons: a 78 Malibu, an 81 Pontiac and newer Toyota. Just don't understand why car manufacturers don't want to make them anymore. They held a lot and were good on gas compared to SUVs. We have the 78 Malibu for sale. "Wagon Lover" put in an ad here to sell it. Good to finally be on here. Anne
A debate that's been had many times. Because minivans came along and did them in. Minivans get gas mileage similar to station wagons but allow easier access to the third seat, which is important if you want to haul grandma and grandpa back there. Children can contort themselves to get into the third seat, but older people not so much. Often the seats can be fully removed, leaving a large cargo-hauling capability. Other reasons, too, like the third seat facing forward instead of rearward, the latter of which no one liked to sit in. But station wagons aren't fully gone. The modern "CUV" (crossover utility vehicle) like the Dodge Journey or Subaru Outback, is more a station wagon than anything else. We just don't use the term "station wagon" any more.
Welcome Anne in Tenn from Denny in Florida. Most of us here are so far out of the loop we'll never get in! Sadly jaunty is right about wagons being replaced by minivans and other modern vehicles. I have to admit they really are handier and more compact. But hopefully I will never own one. Still as we plan to make one last move, before the final big one possibly in a black minivan with curtains on the side wondows, some sort of small car or wagon will replace my oversize pick up truck. I came close to buying a couple different minivans once so anything is possible. Yet I'd much rather have that little Falcon wagon you dream of or any other midsized station wagon. Again, wecome. Let's dream about yesterday together and enjoy the station wagon group.
Welcome! We recently replaced our Expedition with a Ford Flex, about as close to a wagon as one can get these days. Better mileage, roomy, and a lower profile than the big box. Malibu wagon fan myself, have owned a half-dozen and now really regret selling the last one.
Is this a Ford Flex? That's what our daughter has. Not roomy at all. Barely room for four adults and a kiddy seat. Sorry for the bruised photo. She works at an insurance company and an old guy in a Caddy was pulling out of a nursing home across the street when he passed out. If hers is a Flex it wasn't too flexible!
aboard Anne. As you can tell, I'm also a Malibu wagon fan. I'd love to see pictures of the '78 Malibu wagon. Jack
That's a Ford Edge, Denny - same as my SWIMBO'S....... Here's the Flex - more of a traditional wagon profile, although taller.
Welcome to the SWF, Anne.... Your mention of owning a '81 Pontiac wagon piques my interest........ Marshall
