Early 307's had 200 horse 300# torque and got decent fuel mileage. From what I recently found out they were a 283 with a 327 crank. They were built to pull a heavy barge and get decent gas mileage. Getting to the grocery store, church, or the mall is not something little old ladies are in a hurry to do while driving with the left blinker on.
That got you the late 60's / early 70's CHEVY 307. Not the same as the OLDS 307 this one (or my WBM) has......
I heard by the mid 70's the Chevy 307 was detuned. I also know the 350 in my 1977 Corvette felt more like a six.
Chevy quit producing the 307 V8 in 1973 (1968 - 1973 production run). You may be thinking of the 305 Chevy V8 which was produced from 1976 thru 2002. It was very anemic to say the least. The 307 in this Buick was produced by Oldsmobile from 1980 thru 1990. It is completely different than the small block Chevy; nothing interchanges between the two.
Sbc I have a 1969 or early 70 307 in my 39 Ford. Hasn't been driven in years but I remember it was just a driver as far as response. Have a 305 in my 55 Chevy wagon with different heads and RV cam. It runs great.
