Hello all, I'm a long time wagon lover and first time poster here on the forum. I've been looking for an old wagon for a long time and recently stumbled upon a 57 Studebaker Scotsman near me that's for sale. It a running, driving, V8 with a 3 speed (?) transmission with over drive. It needs a little work, but is complete and solid. I know these are fairly rare, but probably not one of the more sought after wagons due to being fairly "plane Jane" compared to other wagons of that era. I'm curious what the experts here on the board think the fair market value is for this thing. These pictures aren't great, but you get the idea. Any help is greatly appreciated.
I can't answer your question on the worth, but because it's looking like it's not a basket case, if you just clean, polish and wax it, I think you'll have an unrestored gem in the rough. That itself is very desireable.
Back in the 90's, I built a 56 Studebaker President 2 door wagon in to a hot rod, with 350/700R4, Mustang II, Vintage Air, power windows.........a great little cruiser. It was different enough that it got lots of attention, even won an award at Goodguys once (What, a driven car got an award???). Last time I Googled that model, pictures of my wagon showed up, taken at a Goodguys show, posted by someone. That car has the makings of a great little car, also. If they aren't asking Barrett/Jackson money for it, I'd say go for it.
Hi Turbo. We'd like to see an introducution . That's a nice looking wagon. Looks clean in the pictures. Only you can tell what it's worth to you. As they said, if the price is reasonable looks like you'll have a great project. To me it's not a plaing Jane. I love the style.
I agree. That's a cool lookin' wagon, and certainly not a "plain jane" by any means. Studebakers were very unique, and not like your typical Chevy, Ford, Plymouth, etc. I guess the Scotsman shares the same body style as the President. Those cars are very easy to drop small block Chevy engines into. My neighbor has a '56 President 4-dr with a 305 Chevy and O.D. trans. Nice car, too. You haven't mentioned the price, but I would seriously consider it if the price is right. It does look original...except for the wheels. It does have patina. Keep us up to date.
I like it and . As for fair market value, it's almost impossible to say...what are they asking for it, looks good but what about rust under the car, interior condition, there are many what's? Just because a car/any car is rare does not make it high value. IMO if YOU like it, it's worth what you are willing to pay and not what some book value says. Good luck with it, as I said I really like it from what I can see.
