My '73 Ford has that tamper-proof plastic piece where the cable attaches to the speedometer. How does one tamper with that? I need to remove it and get in there and lube the cable.
Ford used a bayonet type connection at the speedometer on some years. I'm not familiar with 73's, but 69's had them and I think my 91 Taurus was the same. This web site gives a good explanation with pictures that should help. http://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/speedometer.shtml
It's not an anti-tamper, it's a lock ring. You simply squeeze the ring to release the lock. However, if your hand and arm is as big as mine it's not so simple.
Probably easier to pull the IP. My arm fits but gets scratched in there (the dreaded SPE--Sharp Plastic Edges)! Thanx for the tip!
I'm not familiar on how the Ford one works, but on my AMC and other cars, I unhook the cable from the transmission first so I can get slack in the cable and pull the cluster out further so it's easier to reach.
