According to one of the company's engineers, the Japanese brand may drop the mill from its models in favor of a focus on the 2.0-liter turbocharged flat-four.Continue reading Is Subaru close to ditching 6-cylinder engines? Cylinder reduction is a growing trend, as more horsepower gets squeezed out of lower displacement. European car makers are substituting their smaller, once 4-cylindered models with 3's. For older, lightweight Subarus, 4's were more than adequate
It would not suprize me if the six cylinder became an endangered species in about 10 years. Like the prvious poster stated most 4 cylinder engines made today produce the HP numbers of a V-6 from 8 to 10 years ago. You throw in MPG and emision requirements, and I think most of the cars produced by 2025 will be 4 cylinders. With 6 cylinders being reduced to Trucks and the intro Luxery Models. And there will always be room for the V-8's andlarger in the Performance and Luxery Markets. Heck in the 1970-80's Most cars sold in the US were V-8 Powered, Then from the mid 80's to the present Most were V-6 Powered. It is just a continuing trend. As long as you can attain the HP & Torque you are looking for in a 4 cylinder why not? Cheaper to produce, lighter, and in most cases more MPG (the Subaru WRX Excluded!!!!!)
Subaru used the 6 cylinder in the Tribeca and was available in the Subaru Legacy and a couple of years ago the LLB edition. It is a great running engine, nice torque, very reliable and a decent performer for someone that didn't want a turbo and wanted more than the non turbo 4 cylinder. With that being said-not really good gas mileage.
