Do 60's era Ford's/Mercury's have any indication of the key code needed for tailgate, or any of the other locks? I need a tailgate key and so far the lock shop has been unsuccessful in getting an impression. Next step is to remove the lock, but before I do that I was wondering if there was somewhere hidden in the car an indication of the key code(or whatever you call it).

That key is likely the same one as the glove box and under floor storage. If you need to remove a cylinder, either of those would he easier. When the car was new, there was a key code, but the tag with it is likely long gone, which leaves 2 options. Either get the lock impression, or buy a new lock set.

On the older cars, would the code also be on the build sheet?

Glove box lock was no help.
Where was this key code when new?

For simplicity, I would have to assume the tail gate lock should be coded the same as the door lock cylinder. If it isn't, recode it to match.

We needed a key for the tailgate in our 67 Malibu wagon. Pulled a door lock and had a key made, it worked for the tailgate, too. I thought it was kind of a universal thing?

No, door and ignition keys are different than tailgate. I have no idea why, perhaps the 60's was a time of more keys are more better.

I have had cars with a different key for the doors, trunk, ignition, and glove box.
My 55 Chevy wagon tailgate is different. But probably because I'm using a garage door T-handle which looks almost original. No one knows but me....... and you. The tumbler went bad in the original and I got tired of foolng with it.
I thought a good locksmith could stick a thingie in the lock and figure out how to make a replacement key.

They gave it a go for about 40 minutes yesterday and declared defeat. This place has been around since 1925, so I am thinking they know their stuff.
Of course the lock could be messed up too, I don't know.
