So a few months ago had to have new mufflers put on 1tiredad's Malibu because the "Turbo" mufflers that were new, only about 1500 miles on them started "Popping" real bad. Sounded like popcorn being popped at a deafening volume. After they were removed I picked it up and shook it and you could hear the inside all busted up. We replaced them with only thing shop had in stock which was the Flowmaster 40series which was considerably louder. Don't get me wrong, they sound good, just a little loud. Anyway I have put probably only 300 miles or so in the last 4 months on them and today I spent the day in the garage messing with my wagon and Malibu and when I started it up I could hear a slight "popping" starting again when it was idling, not bad yet but I did notice it. When giving it throttle it must force the loose pieces to back of case and it doesn't do it. It is very slight right now but I will be driving it about 50 miles tomorrow and hope it don't bust it loose. I have checked for restrictions in the exhaust, which it has none. My question is what may be causing these mufflers to bust loose the insides? I have no backfiring or anything, any thoughts or maybe just bad luck with junky mufflers? I hate to go to one of those small flow thru race mufflers because then it will be obnoxiously loud. Any thoughts?

I have Flowmasters on our '55 Bel Air, my dad has thrush turbo mufflers on his corvette. I have run Flowmasters on my '66 C-10 and '55 Apache. Only issue I ever had was when they get old but not with new mufflers, I have never had this problem. Has me baffled and I really don't want it any louder than it is now and gets a little expensive to keep changing mufflers that often!

Kind of crazy question but are you sure animals are not building nests in them? I only ask because I had it happen to me at one point.

The only other thing I can think of is that the car is running rich, and carbon is building up.

Strangest issue I have ever had :hmmm: It isn't very noticeable right now, very slight. Hopefully I don't have the same issue as last mufflers because they were blown completely out. Maybe I was just hearing things yesterday, after taking it on the little run today I will be able to tell more...

About the only suggestion I have is do like my son does. Turn the stereo way up and you won't hear all those strange noises.
