I want to help him sell it but have no idea whatsoever how much (if anything) it is worth.

Wondering if it's worth trying to sell or should we just have it hauled off for scrap.

Maybe you're the one who needs a refresher on table manners.
Excuse me for trying to follow the forum rules. I am very sorry.

Doesn't change a thing. This is still not a for-sale ad! He's asking for advice! He wants to HELP his father! How is this not obvious to you? How dense are you?

And even if he WAS wrong in posting a for sale ad as his first post, was your response, which was basically to spit in his face, appropriate?

I have an idea. Why don't you let the moderators do the moderating instead of appointing yourself a thread policeman.

    Newbie,

If fixing the car is an option prior to the sale, it probably would be worth it. If the car is in excellent shape it might still be worth 2 grand to the right person when it is up and running. If it has been sitting for 10 years it might also likely need a tune up and fluid changes on top of whatever the repair is. That stuff would probably not cost very much if someone in your family is able to repair it, but if you have to go to a shop you could easily drop a couple of grand to get all of that sorted with the cost of labor these days. I would not anticipate you being able to sell it for much more than 500 in its current state. In any event, good luck. If the car is still in decent cosmetic shape, it is probably worth trying to save in my opinion.

Sadly you didn't bother to introduce yourself yet expect help selling a wagon.
At least you are trying to save one. There are a few Illinois members who may be interested.

Mr. jaunty sir, you seem to enjoy picking things apart and correcting others. Well let me correct you by reposting my complete first comment as seen above in blue. I did compliment Mr Newbie and suggested he may find a buyer for the wagon he has FOR SALE.
Again I am so sorry I attempted to get our new member to post a real introduction then a for sale ad or go to the proper section to ask for assistance.

After 10 years of sitting, not ran since...... it's gona need a lot even if dry garage parked, brake lines, fuil lines, gas tank cleaned, gaskets dried out, hoses, even exhaust, transmition....... the list can go on and on. With or with out seeing any pics of the wagon itself IMO a "book value :rofl2:"has ZERO merit as a car, any car is only worth what a buyer will pay ..... unless it's a push pull and drag cash for clunkers trade in and or insurance claim. And now you have to think $....are you willing to tow it to a reputable shop to pay them to inspect, and have a verdict of....well for $ we "could" get it running to then what else is going to fail now.....it's a gamble with old cars no matter how you look at it after they have sat for years...... before you know it it could end up as a OMG..... all I wanted to do was sell fast and now I have so much $ into it and I'm still not able to sell because it needs more $ and now you have a car that is not worth what you have spent on it.....

We have seen on this site members who hold "book value" guides like a bible to then sell far below that value so.............

But a intro in the proper place would have been nice even if selling witch by the sounds of things is the only reason for joining after reading the original post and good on you for trying to help dad. We like wagons, will try to help, but pictures say a thousand words.

Wow!! I never intended to cause such a controversy over introductions so I apologize for that. I'm a member of a couple of similar forums for Acura and Jeep so I'm not new to these types of forums and felt my initial post was appropriate. But again I apologize to anyone offended. Thank you all for the great information. I don't think towing to a shop for repair is an option so we'll probably try to sell it as is once I can get some pictures. At that point I will definitely post it in the For Sale section.

I think it's more of a situation of two members trying to both do what is all well in good in their understanding.

So, Welcome. Do you have any photos of the car to post on here? I'd like to see it even if I am not buying it.

:Welcome:Mr Newbie it was not my plan to offend you in any way. Just point out that most new members go to the Welcome Wagon thread and make some sort of introduction first.
Things got out of hand. Sorry and good luck.

That may not be the correct name and it may have been discontinued. What it was for years was a large downtown event with different types cars in separate areas, mostly city and business parking lots. It was very popular for the low riders and vanners. They'd cruise around a route raising and lowering their cars as they drove. One year they held a drive in movie at a parking lot down town. Always fun and interesting.
