I've found a pretty nice Country Squire in Canada and I'm considering buying it. My concern is getting it back into the States without a lot of hassle. The seller has agreed to trailer it to Port Huron (saving me 5 hours) where I would take possession. My concern is the paperwork and any associated problems with bringing it across the border. I would of course have it insured and the title in hand. Would I get a temporary "intransit plate" in Canada or get it once across the border? Any fees I don't know about? I've tried to read through the EPA/DOT stuff but I just get confused. Anyone who has done this before. I would appreciated any help/information you could provide. Thanks, Terry
I have no idea, but would suggest calling your local tag office, to see if they can provide any input.
A guy on another forum I'm on just did this. Here's his experience. http://www.fordfestiva.com/forums/showthread.php?54872-I-smuggled-a-festy-over-the-border "I remember someone asking me to let them know how importing Dave's festiva went so I thought I'd post this. What I needed: Title Bill of sale EPA & DOT letter from Ford. (Cost 18$ and took them three days to email it to me. I drove it home so I had to get a temporary plate from the Canadian dmv. For that I needed A second form of ID Proof of insurance Fill out some forms Give them 20 dollars Ignore how b*tc*y the dmv woman was Drove it to the border and filled out some forms and drove it home with no plates. Luckily I only live 15 minutes from the border. I would recommend towing it home if you live any further since you can't register the car without the proper paperwork from customs. "
Yeah, your licensing department will be able to answer any questions and direct you as to what hoops you have to jump through.
Here are some past threads with information. http://www.stationwagonforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=14534&highlight=Importing;+Canada http://www.stationwagonforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=16301&highlight=Importing;+Canada
68 Country Squire Yes, it is a 68, I believe it had been reviewed on this forum. My understanding is you don't need the EPA/DOT paperwork as it's over 25 years old and exempt, therefore you don't need the document from the manufacturer. So if I have the title in hand and proof of insurance I should be able to get it across the border? I also understand that I can drive the car home as long as I have the bill of sale and insurance, or to the nearest SOS office.
No personal knowledge of it just remember seeing the listing for it, is it this one? http://www.kijiji.ca/v-classic-cars...na/1029986982?enableSearchNavigationFlag=true
Looks like it would be a great ride once it's all put back together. You should phone Customs at Port Huron to see just what is needed so that you don't get held up at the border. Have the seller purchase a trip permit for the vehicle, its only $10 (unless it went up) that will give you ten days of it being plated so that you can drive it home. Good luck with everything.
I thought I remember hearing you have to give customs the paperwork 3 days before you cross to give them time to check it out. Might be wrong but make sure you check it out.
He sent photo's of trim but I think some of it was missing. I requested that they match the pieces to the vehicle to determine that none were missing. The seller is not the owner, he's selling for a friend.
