just curious, has anyone been able to replace the 4x10 speakers in a 80's B-body gm with 6x9 without totally hacking the car? I want/need to upgrade but don't want the WAYGONE to look like some 16yr old put the house speakers in the back!

I seem to recall some forum thread somewhere (not necessarily here...) from a guy who did just that - had to hack it. I'm interested in replacing my entire system, but I'm not going to change the size of the rear speakers.

Ya know, I may have a pair of factory 4X10s I pulled from an '86 Century sedan...I'd have to measure them to verify they're 4X10s, mind you, as I haven't handled them in about 15 or more years, but if you're interested, and I can dig them out (they're buried in a box in storage), we can work something out. There's two of them, I believe. Let me know if you're interested.

I guess one has to be careful about the 8 ohm speakers used on factory radios systems through the 80's on GM cars. Mix and matching could result in damaged equipment.

That's right. But perhaps he's also possibly looking to install a head unit?

OK. Nevermind. But make sure you do a 'build thread' for the install.

In my 68 CP, I have a Craig digital tuning am/fm cassette shaft radio. It is internally shorted since it likes to quit at random. When I begin taping against it it turns on once more. I have older Pioneer 6x9's in the rear behind the 2nd row seat and Pioneer speakers in the front door panels. I have a Kenwood shaft cassette/ radio I pulled from the junkyard that I am going to install that should be more reliable. I never transitioned to CD's and have used mix tapes and now an ipod. I am also thinking about adding an under dash 8-track. There are thrift shops that still sell 8-tracks and if I end up in a radio dead area, having supplemental tunes is a good thing. It would also look period correct. :)

Good luck. Way back in the early 90's I put a Custom Autosound brand GM looking stereo in my 1955 Chevy wagon. I'll bet it hasn't been on thirty minutes total. My pick up truck is nearly 10 years old and the stereo in it also hasn't had much use.
Between the sounds of my 55 Chevy and my wife talking when in the truck I don't need music. :D

beware on the rear speakers you have very little room for replacement speakers as the pillar is behind the speaker. i had to cut mine out for the magnet to fit into the rear post if you go with the factory location.
