The special tool can be annoying, especially if you loose it or as when I got my 83 Gutless, there wasn't one to be found. You can re-install the spoked caps with out but then if one flys away:cry:. Before I changed hub caps I found there was not tool to be found, it was aggravating to say the least getting that cap lock nut off, but I did on all 4. I then went to Home-Repo, matched the depth and threads and kept a 1/4 inch drive ratchet, 3/8 socket with extension in the glove box. Even if I lost that, everyone can come up with that, better than having a 10lb hub cap flying off at 50MPG.

I'm shure I'm the only one who will say this, but I like the spokes, I'd keep them! My Buick insurance expires next month and I have planned on insuring my 83, and putting the spokes back on with W-W-tires.

Yours ROCKS fannie, dare to be different and don't change a thing!;)............ or get some "Dork 26" inch wheels" for it, 20 speakers with boom box, then you could cruise your crib ... in style?:49::rofl2:

I found a set of wire wheel hubcaps for my 1980 Malibu with narrow whites. Those didn't need a special tool. I just used a rubber mallet and tapped that kind on. Towed the Malibu for six years behind a motorhome and drove it to work on potholes.
Maybe a different wire wheel?

It's a different design, owing to the fact that the FWD wheels have such a wide offset. It's the only way they'll stay on at speed. And BTW, even a RWD will lose a hubcap at speed, even if it only weighs 3 pounds. On a very sharp, reduced speed, left curve, I took it at a much faster speed in the CP, and before I completed the turn with rear tires squealing, the left front cap popped off and rolled into the bushes. I went back a few hours later and couldn't find it. Bear in mind, this was on an interstate interchange, so I could only stay a few minutes.

It was in the early 80's when I got my wire wheel hubcaps at a salvage yard. May been off a similar Buick. They were heavy. Never lost one.

The last and maybe only hubcap I lost was after retiring. It was on my 1987 Chevy van after a right rear blow out. They were full hubcaps. Possibly it was the stainless outer ring I lost. I had more on my mind after my wife had just gotten out of the hospital. I remember my son and I drove 40+ miles back later and found it across the 4-lane highway.
We used to look for hubcaps and collected many of them just for fun.

I think(???) the whole special key thing really started as a anti theft devise and nothing more....???? , Remember, hubcaps used to get stolen....now you almost can't give them away. Even my 80 Plymouth with factory spokes had it...that is before I tossed them and put mags on the car.

I was wondering if Lil Sis was the same as your... a bit younger guess she's a Lil cousin too.

As for the special tool to remove the wheel covers, buddy had to make up a tool because the original one was damaged some how. It's really no different then having lock nuts...I(we) don't have any intention onchanging them or buying different wheels...she just got brand new tires! I'm more interested in having the leaks fixed and having her Safety to get her on the road. :p

    YOU GUYS(members) ARE AWESOME.

Thank you so much for all the support and positive comments.

Not one person has made me(us) feel guilty about not spending the money on Fannie. Her day will come, I just didn't want to pass up this cute little wagon.

You all have made the purchase very rewarding. I really beat myself up for a few days but now I'm getting a bit excited.

Thankyou for doing what you ALL do best...supporting, excepting, sharing your knowledgable and fun to hang with.
