Well I hope you had a great dinner fannie, I'm sure it was darn good..... even if you didn't have spuds, mashed rice works I guess??....JK Crowd is smaller every year here, last year dinner was at my kids for the first time and this year it was just The kido, Deb, our adopted Grandma who has been a close family friend for.....since my girl was in diapers!, and myself, we went for brunch. I gave thanks my kid is doing OK and has gone back to collage for some history degrees, still working, got it together for years now, and Deb has not killed me, and Ilga out, our only elder left was able to join us even with ailing health. We also took her shopping after. My Dad called from Europe this AM and it was really nice to talk to him again as he can not travel anymore. I gave thanks to, today for the first time in years I was able to make it down a steep windy rocky trail in a close yet rural park I loved and my old dogs loved going too..... Deb and the boys....Rascal would not set foot in the ocean Griffin swimming of to Japan, NO BS, he would have just kept going, he loves water! Some one made a very solid drift wood mini cabin, it was very solid....wish I had a BBQ and a sleeping bag! Now this pic, is kinda creepy in a way to us...this small rural park is where I trained my old pup Bart but lost him at a young age. This place was his favorite and you could tell buy his reaction when ever we went there. On the trial there is a small creek with a bridge and Bart would all ways almost not listen as he loved that spot and would hide under the bridge...... I'm on the bridge taking this pic of Griffin in the creek, Deb and I were talking about Bart and 'his bridge" when I took this picture. No smoke, to warm to see your breath, yet when I got home and loaded the pics...... that haze looks like Barts profile:confused: Any ways, let by gones be by gones, Thanks giving is just that IMO, giving thanks no matter where you live or when it's celebrated, the name of the holiday says it all
Long story short; The English "Pilgrims" got bailed out after spending a long cold hungry winter by a friendly native tribe. Its unfortunate the way "thanks" was expressed for the next 200+ years.
My wife at sobeys (Greenwood) so i was smiling to read about your shopping experience? Hope you can smile now. When asked by a customer they are trained to show /get/ escort the customer to what they are looking for. Good price on the ham right. I don't like the flyers on thursday either.
They also celebrate their Independence Day before the U.S. does. Must be something to do with crossing a finish line first or something
Short version, the beginning of it.......in the late 1500's 15 ships left England in search of the north west passage, 1 ship was lost via a ice berg, the remaining ships were beaten by storms and separated. Some how they all found each other over a long perioud time, The minister assigned to the journey held a sermon to witch thanks was given to god for there survival. ...... although little mentioned in the history books, the natives (Eskimo) took pity on the sick and ill survivors and helped them. If you look at our history also, we did not express "thanks" either once we became a country.
This is incorrect. "The First Thanksgiving" as it is known was celebrated by the Pilgrims after their first successful harvest at Plymouth Plantation. Other colonies also had their own observances. It was Abraham Lincoln in 1863 who proclaimed a national day of Thanksgiving. In reality, all thanksgivings can be traced back to the ancient, pagan harvest festivals which were continued by secular English religions.
Customer Service is an oxymoron. Drove the 5 miles into town today to cash a $100 bill, mail a package, buy some lumber, and get a pack of smokes. Bank was closed, so I figured I'd drop the $100 on the post office to pay the postage for my package. They were closed too. Went to the lumber yard and he was bitching cause he couldn't make his bank deposit, but said he could cash my $100. Now I've got change, my lumber, and my smokes, but still have to go back tomorrow to mail my package. It's going priority mail, but not really because my priority was to send it today. Someone's got their priorities screwed up. Who really gives a rat arse about Columbus anyhow?
On this day of Canadian's giving thanks I would like to thank all of you for continually making me smile. Although we all have a different prospective on many topics you usually give me reason to smile. Thanks
And I thought it was Americus who discovered America... But you are correct about the Vikings. Greenland was their landing point, and there still are some pieces of their ships up there on both the shores of Newfoundland/Labrador and Greenland. Did you also know that the Vikings also formed the State Of Iceland here in Canada, just an hour north of where I live? They lost a battle with the British Army in 1862 and it was renamed Gimli, Manitoba, right on the southwest shore of Lake Winnipeg. Canada became a British Colony in 1867. It wasn't until after WWII that Canadians had Canadian Passports. Always useful to see how other countries see each other. An old friend used to say that Gratitude brings Altitude. Giving Thanks just makes good sense, especially in a crisis.
