I used 305 4bbl truck heads with 327/350 horse cam and a 600 holley. Woke her right up. Lumpy sound and fair mileage.(If you can keep your foot under control)

-------^^^^^^^ X 3 and more. Why replace one of GM's best small V-8's with anything else unless you are building an all out race wagon?
For many years guys almost killed for double hump heads and a 327.
For better fuel mileage and performance use the 2004R tranny. A bolt up by simply moving the rear mount a few inches back.
Stop following the sheep! All you'll end up with is sheep dip on your feet.

Back then, if we were to dig out a pit on the road and cover it with brush, we would likely have bagged a 2 barrel 283, or at best, a like-equipped 327 smallvalve in some humdrum sedan, Sir. Roadside bombs were primitive back then, also. Because, cellphones were not yet invented, we'd have to probably use walkie talkies or similar gadgets bought at Radio Shack. If some kids were using similar devices at like frequencey in the neighbor hood, we would have likely been bagged ourselves instead
