It has come to my attention that I am in need of a replacement harmonic balancer for my Sporty. I have checked in with over 36 websites without any luck. The only site that has one is TA performance and my mechanic feels that it is a bit spendy. If we cannot find another source I will be going that route however. Any suggestions for me? My wagon is a 1968 Buick Sportwagon with a 400 cubic inch V8 and factory air conditioning. The engine and current harmonic balancer are original to the car. Thanks to any who may be able to answer this one.
Carquest? Napa? Seriously. I have yet to stump both of them at the same time. For best results, inquire in person with a part number. I may be lucky but the Carquest 32 miles from here generally can order most anything and will get pretty close on the pricing.
Thanks for the vote of confidence 64', I was blown away yesterday when we had a carb kit on the shelf for a Carter 938 carb, fits Chevy in line 6's clear back to 1937.
Try Year One or any of the other places that specialize in muscle car parts. After all, your Sport Wagon is really a Buick GS in disguise.
You could buy a used one and replace the sleeve: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Buick-400-4...-Balancer-GS-GSX-Skylark-Rivera-/271258174183
I wonder why the manufacturers never put witness marks on balancers so you could tell if they had spun. This is one of the hardest things to diagnose as a bad one can cause you to set your timing wrong and affect performance. Which also raises the question: How does the rebuilder know where to index them when he rebuilds them.
That's a good question OldFox, I have noticed a few (and not many) we sell here at Napa have hash lines all the way through the pulley in line with TDC. I assume that this would cause a misalignment if the the pulley has spun, but I see where that would be a b*tch to diagnose without them.
Many thanks to all of you who were able to offer suggestions. Here is what I found out. Carquest and Napa, at least the ones in my area, do not stock that part. Rare Parts does not stock them for my wagon. Year One does but I don't care who you are, $500.00 is a little much for this part. The Damper Doctor does list this part but it does not look exactly like what I have, however we will contact them for more information. So far, it looks like TA performance is the front runner, and their photo looks exactly like what I have on the car now. My mechanic is not a fan of resleeving these so that is out. I do appreciate the help and advice, thanks again.
