It always bothers me when Cars and Politics get mixed up. When Acid Rain became the big issue in the 60's and Labour Unions were looking for protective legislation from invading international auto unions, two things happened: 1) The Auto Pact was passed (labour protection) 2) Without any consultation with owners, the manufacturers lobbied the politicians to embed themselves into Emissions Standards, Training our Government Inspectors (NRC, Environment Canada) and we got Catalytic Converters, Air Pumps, and EGR valves, plus, plus. Number 2 never worked except for the Platinum brokers. 40 years later we have worse polution, Higher lung diseases, more people with asthma, and more people with unprecedented allergies. Number 1 also got promoted to us consumers that our Canadian models would be identical to US Models. Anybody ever see a Canadian big-a$$ Pontiac Bonneville with the wide US Axle? Well, here's a new one that I take very suspiciously. Embed consumers' rights into formal legislation on automotive repairs and the Feds will find a way to issue 'rebuilding permits' or set standards, or modify long-standing, ineffective emissions standards, when we 'repair' our older cars. Canadian Federal Private Member’s Bill C-425 to ensure consumers’ “Right to Repair” reported on the Automotive Industries Association of Canada. http://www.aiacanada.com/document.cfm?itemid=154258&smocid=1487&isNews=1 This is meddling retroactively. I can't see why the Industry Association (lobby group) thinks this guy is on the right track. If he really wanted to do the right thing, he'd press Parliament (Canadian equivalent to US Congress) to sponsor dedicated Federal Forums so that owners could cross-pollinate our tips and tricks to make our vehicles more environmentally-friendly - from Roller Painting (cuts Air-contaminants by 40% and up), distributor and tuning methods that reduce consumption, reduce emissions or discover new motive power methods (Electric Cars, dual fuel, whatever.) But these self-appointed re-election spin-doctors put their feet in our mouths, hoping we think they're giving us something new, when in fact, they're meddling in a lively, healthy industry. The US EPA (equivalent to our Energuide Labs for Cars, etc.) sponsors all kinds of INDIVIDUAL efforts, websites, and schools to develop better solutions. We only sponsor big companies and lobbyists. What a sham!, What a shame! They're paid over $200,000 per year by our taxes, plus assistants, researchers, investigating trips all over the country and planet, and then they 'sneak' in more cracks for future Press Conferences on 'How we dealt with old gas-guzzlers'. Give me a break!
well Norm...if it makes you feel any better.... We still have it a lot better than many of the states in the US and Europe.. ....i know...i know....but its something ....at least we can still wash our own car in our own yard !! ...but you are correct....people who have NO working knowledge of an issue...should not be able to make the decisions
Oops! Manitoba is seeking legislation to control how much water we use in the Cities. When Alberta's Oil patch pumps in CO2, they use water to get it down and push up the rest of the oil or Natural Gas. The Assiniboine and Saskatchewan Rivers don't get enough oil to drive our Hydro Electric plants, or irrigate all the farms through to the Hudson Bay, or generate enough moisture for the snow to prevent/minimize Avalanches in the Ski mountains, where too many have died in the last 6 years. We're treating regional issues like they have no impact down the road, literally and figuratively. When was it that Edmonton passed the car-washing bylaw... 2004 or 2005? Since the Oil boys are pumping 300 billion barrels per year in the wells, the folks in Edmonton can't water their lawns, and can't wash their cars, after 1:00 PM. Filling a hot-tub or a pool requires a special permit. And you know how the Alberta folks love their hottubs! Pakistan and California are both opening up old oil wells since 2002 to recover, filter and reuse the water. California uses it to irrigate their Orange groves, and Lettuce farms, you know the stuff we pay dearly for all winter. The advantage that it has, is that the oil boys of California's Oil boom gave up their mineral rights. The guys in our Oil patch won't do that, because they can make another boom, as bottled water keeps costing as much or more than gasoline. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/2943946.stm http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/1488654.stm Rev, there's no reason for a piece of the planet with 5% of its land-masse, 20% of its fresh water, and only 0.005% of its population to create 2% of the planet's mess. That's Canada for us, for our kids and grand-kids, etc. So if guys and gals like us know how to make the old iron work better, be cleaner, because we enjoy the hobby, why not encourage us to show and tell our 'better mouse traps' so that others can climb on this wholesome train? No, that doesn't get votes. Politicians have to promote a "Right", that can then be taken away, just like our clean air and clean water, and clean veggies and clean pet-foods. In Canada and the US, we need our modes of transportation. You can pack France's 80 million people into Quebec over 43 times! It takes 2 Manitobas to form Mexico - they have 130 million, we've got 1.1 million. Shipping costs are cheap in Mexico. Gas prices are the same. But legislating this so-called 'Right to Repair' helps parts importers, since we've already lost most of the BIG Three's feeder plants. I just read on the Nippon Steel's website that we're running out of Zinc, globally, so they have to re-formulate automotive steel to reduce the need for zinc and improve rust-resistance. From Nippon Steel's October 2003 News blurb Issue Number 308: http://www0.nsc.co.jp/shinnihon_english/nsnews/pdf/2003100709021526463.pdf Hey Rev, all I was looking for were some Rust prevention and remedial techniques and got this thread on rust which had that PDF above. http://www.clublexus.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-95962.html There are more articles on rust chemistry, pipeline fabrication, corrosion science for cars in the 2003 and 2004 Nippon newsletters, so here's the link: http://www0.nsc.co.jp/shinnihon_english/nsnews/ Don't use the News menu because it goes to corporate investor info. This one is an Employee/Supplier Newsletter series (nsnews). The PDF was PART 2, PART 1 is on the 2003 list (issue 307). And then I switched to searching for a big Pick-A-Part operation in Saskatchewan and got this Hot-Air balloon from a Federal MP, who's party I thought might have a higher IQ! Appearances are deceiving!
We have relaxed laws in Quebec for a lot of stuff... like no water meters, no emissions inspections... However, they do make it hard to own a modified car as you cant deviate from stock. some ricers get their cars impounded and only them back once their cars has been "de-riced"
