So went to dinner on Friday at Cracker Barrell after work. I picked up my Dad and two of the kids, and Misty picked up the other three. I was in the Custom Cruiser, and Misty was in her Denali. Had a nice dinner and then went out to the vehicles. Dad, myself, and Lily got in the Custom Cruiser. Eddie, Joseph, Johnathan and Tuck got in the Denali with Misty. Keep in mind we have frontage roads here in Texas...two-lane roads that parrallel the main highways. Well the onramp to I-35 is right there in front of Cracker Barrell. I pulled out first and planned to take the southbound I-35 frontage down about a mile to the turn-around that goes back north to our house. Well Misty shot out behind me, and Eddie in the passenger seat leans out and waves at us, and she shoots past us onto I-35. The race was on to get home. I press my foot down and the Cruiser gathers speed...the Denali is on the highway and ahead, but the Olds is picking up speed....60-70-75....we shoot down the frontage road, Lily yelling GO GO GO and my Dad shaking his head and smiling. Misty is ahead, but has to take the offramp to catch the northbound turn-around...and there is a semi exiting! Ha! We shoot past the Denali and whip under the highway...and get stuck at a Yield waiting for the northbound frontage traffic to pass.. Misty then pulls in right behind us, waiting to go too. I can see her smile in the rear-view, and Lily is in the 3rd row waving at Eddie, who is NOT smiling. I see an opening in traffic and take off....my 350 TBI wheezing through it's single exhaust. It takes all of 10-seconds for Misty and her 6.0 Denali to shoot past us, leaving the Olds for dead. I feel totally dejected...I got smoked by a TRUCK. Dangit. Come On! We got home and the Misty just smiled at me and said "Problem Honey?", while the boys danced around laughing at me. Dad was no help either...all he said was "I told you not to sell that Buick". Dang!
Find yourself a wrecked 2007 or 8 Tahoe with the 5.3. Put on a good exhaust and then Superchip it with a good intake. The Denali will never stand a chance, and you will be getting WAY better fuel economy than you are not. Probably an extra 10 mpg or so. It can be made that good.
Maybe 81X11 here needs to be the first one to swap a Megasquirted EFI 455 and a built 200-4R into a whale wagon?
I know how you feel.... This 307 is ok on the highway, cruises very well between 55-65 or so, but the acceleration up to that speed is so sloooooooow.
And that's what we're gonna sneak down and put in Misty's Denali for the next meal at Kwakker Barrel. Plus drill big holes all over the undercarriage, get rid of the extra stereo junk, and basically lighten it to dragster weight.
If you think that's bad, try punching a Pontiac with a 301. It just sits there sucking air until the (good) converter stops slipping enough to get the car moving. However, from a 45-50 mph kickdown, it runs like a red-arsed baboon. It kicks out of passing gear at 85, but I don't know how fast it will go because that's as fast as the speedo registers.
Get an LS-anything - it's a great platform to build cheap horsepower. The 5.3 LS mentioned earlier is making 600+ hp in an article in Car Craft this month. I don't think there's any engine out there that can make horsepower as cheap and reliably as an LS engine these days.
Yup, it's embarrassing when your wife blows the doors off your ride. My stock wagons vs my honeys 2 Celeica GTSs..... face palm My stock wagons vs my honeys mini van.... NO face palm My stock wagons vs her 2011 Escape.... face palm Ya think I would learn and insure my parts wagon for just one day, just one freeken day!
