just because I have a family doesnt mean i cant have a fun car...My 83 chevy malibu, runs low to mid 10's at the track....aluminum 5.3 motor with a small turbo. full interior, bench seat, GN rear with 3.23's. has an 80 front clip. fiberglass bumpers and hood. and over winter i changed it up a little, lowered and 17" torq thrusts.
aboard! Cool lookin' Malibu wagon. Looks like an '81 grille and header panel with '82-'83 fenders with the side marker lights. I like the Torque Thrust wheels on there much better. It makes it look more like street machine. Did you also lower it a bit? Jack
to the forum. Looks like you can get the family to Wally World while the sales are still going on. Love that body style. Wheels/tires are perfect. Don't go any larger.
Thanks everyone.... I always had big n little wheels for the track but seeing more and more pro touring cars with lowered suspension and 17's began to grow on me. Yes I had to lower it...with the aluminum motor the front sat real high...so I ended up cutting 3" off the front coils and added stock sedan coils to the rear to lower it about 1". She used to float down the road like a caddy so I'm not sure how its going to ride now.
Figuring my times I'm guessing 550 rwhp...that's at 10 psi...people run these motors to 20 psi with no problems....no safety belts or cage limits what I can run at the track. I usually drive 100 miles to the track..race and drive home...still getting 20+ mpg
This is where I get confused. Son was running a 327, double hump heads, 30 over, 750 Holly set around 14-1 and timing around 34 degrees. In a 4600# 1976 El Camino. Showed dyno runs at 500HP at 7000RPM. Add 2 250-HP nitros set up to come on 40% up to 100% by 1/8th mile when second set of the two stage nitros kicked in. Was running a cell with aviation fuel. Running rich was a trick from his motorcycle boss. Also had dyno slips showing 500HP for the engine alone with a total 1001 HP at 7200 RPM with both stages wide open. I can't believe it but he had the slips and the wins at several tracks to prove it. Got grounded from Gainesville Raceway for not having roll bars, etc. He was winning by 2 to 5 car lengths till they put him up against a Buick Gran National V-6 turbo. He consistently beat the Buick by only a bumper width length according to the lites and movies. 6" to 12" Doing late nite free exhibitions him and the Buick took turns winning when neither was supposedly trying as hard. Friday test and tune. One time he bypassed the two stage set ups and pushed both red nitros buttons after launch. Said the Elce was off the ground 18" or more with rear bumper on the ground. U-joint broke at 7000+RPM. He cut the engine and the El Camino came down breaking both upper ball joints, long tube headers, Miloden deep aluminum pan and deep turbo 350 oil pan, among other things. He changed the A-arms that he carried with him while his friend went to town to get the other stuff. Raced again on Saturday and won. All this driving 150 miles from home at Valdosta, Ga. Later redid the two nitros bottles and two two stage set ups to automatically operate at the push of one button after launch. He builds motorcycle race bikes that use nitros and a turbo so him and his boss were using all their winning bike tricks on the 327. Even the nitros was mostly hidden under the air gap intake. No I never knew this till recently. Always wondered why he was changing so many rear ends, trannys, and tires. The show El Camino ended up parked in the woods till he scrapped it after running two years. He said the cylinder walls looked like polished mirrors. .
