Steak n' Shake started in Normal, IL and spread thru central IL. I used to go to some of the original ones in Champaign/Urbana, Danville, and Indianapolis. Danville was our home base and there were 3 there. Our gang would all meet up at the end of our dates to have a bite before heading to our favorite parking spot in the boonies.

Do kids still go parking. They'd have to have a station wagon these days. True love disappeared with bench seats. I remember an old slogan from back then:
    If you drink, don't park.
    Accidents cause people.

My favorite was always a burger with mustard, pickle and onion, and an order of Chili Mac. It was best in the winter. When the carhops delivered your tray, there would be a glaze of hardened orange grease on top which you spread on your crackers.

I once conned an SnS manager into selling me a 10 lb block of their special chili meat because there were no SnS's in Chicagoland and I wanted to make my own chili mac. He also gave me the recipe to their red sauce.........1 bottle catsup and 2 tablespoons of Worchestershire sauce...shake well. I would have had enough to last me for a year. But the wife saw it in the freezer, put it in a large pot and used it as spaghetti sauce. I was totally PO'd.

Okay you did it again! The nearest Steak-N-Shake is 45 miles away and it's drizzling outside. I'm hungry for a burger and a chocolate milkshake. My wife says "no way. Go to bed." Now that's also an offer I can't refuse! :rofl2: I doubt either one involves steak burgers.

I'd actually forgotten about the Steak-N-Shake in Normal, Illinois. Been there many times. We lived around 50 miles east of there. About like the one in Gainesville from us now. But Gainesville is not normal!:rofl2:
