One reason I have never messed with my blue 83 Olds My old truck with the single exhaust was quiet also, you could barly hear it when standing infront of the hood. As for your truck, remember they are only origonal once. My old truck was a 10+ year resto when I got it so it wan't exactly origonal anymore but all stock drive train. I used it as a truck, put a couple nicks in it here and there but used it for what it was ment to be. Had I repainted it etc..... well I wasn't into a show truck, had alot of fun going to get parts, dirt, gravel, hauling materials etc because I wasn't woried if it got a scratch. I never abused it, I just used it
I spent about a hour this evening and polished about 3/4 of the hood out and man did it make a big difference. The gnats about ate me alive since we have no breeze but I have about 2 weeks to get it done. I will do a panel a day hopefully depending on work but I want to have it at the cruise night for the first Saturday of April since that is where I found it to show my friend I got it from my progress. With the oxidation off the Mahogany paint with the patina it looks like a good ole honest truck like Fox said!
K.I.S.S. Totally agree with keeping it simple and orginal. You are planning to use this great truck if you start making it to pretty to may be nervous about ruining the new paint. Polish it, as Silver says, and enjoy it the way it is.
Wow! 1tireman, when I need advice I'm coming to this forum. I think you are doing what is right and what you've been told. Any ole truck can be restored or painted. But it can only be original once. Sadly my sons 85 Silverado was repainted. It rained that very day as it sat outside. The owner water sanded it and never got around to repainting it when our son bought it. Even so, it looks decent and he keeps getting people begging him to sell it. It's a 1985 and not as desirable as yours. A lot of people want a truck they can use and they can trust has no hidden bodywork. Keep polishing and keep havin fun with it. You can always paint it ten years from now.
Got sent home early today, they let me make a couple hours overtime so I got the buffer out on the truck. Came out pretty good considering it is a 36 year old work truck, here are the results Clean up the wheel wells and I think this truck is done!
Got patina? YES!! Look at those original wheels, TOO!! Drive and enjoy, Tman!! Anything needs fixing...use original parts. Including the seat covers! What a great old survivor! I'd sure love to have it.
I am taking my truck to the cruise night tonight to show the guy I bought it from what I have done so far. I also had mentioned a new co-worker we got in the shop about 3 or 4 weeks ago that I hit it off with as he is a car guy also. He just texted me to see if I would be there. He also asked what I would be going in. I quoted my wife and said ,"Look for the cleanest, raggedy pick-up there!" The friend I got the truck from is also good friends with the original owners daughter so I think he will be pleased to tell her it is being cared for the way they wanted.
Made it to the cruise night and they had a big carshow today so they had probably close to 200 cars which is a really good turn out. Got to see a lot of friends I haven't seen in a couple years. Seen the friend I bought the truck from and he said he was glad to see I was enjoying the truck. They had a beautiful '64 pro street Nova wagon there that was a burnt orange color. Had to be one of the nicest cars I have ever seen and I had no camera!
