There is an old service station here in town that has been in disrepair for many years. At one point in my youth I seem to remember a business being run out of there, but that was a long time ago. It is a neat old building with the right style and look to it. I have often thought about how cool it would be if someone would open a business there. But I figured it would likely end up bulldozed. Well, I was driving through town the other day and low and behold, someone actually cleaned the place up. The Signage over the door says "Genuine Auto Glass" so I believe it's a glass shop. My buddy needs a windshield in his 65 Impala, so he's going to check it out. On Saturday my oldest son, his dog and I broke the Fury out of it's winter hibernation and went into town to run some errands. I needed to talk to the guys at the tire shop across the street, and I just couldn't resist, so I parked the Plymouth in front of the old station. I didn't have my camera, so All I have are these crummy cell phone pictures. The Dog, waiting for us to return: My oldest and his dog (kinda hard to see the dog)
It's nice when yu see old station saved. Next time I'm in town I'll try to remember my camera. We have one old station that although the gas pumps are long gone, it still services cars. building looks similar to this but the pump area is on a single post like this
Looks like a good building for a small auto glass shop. Appears not to be too old - early 60's maybe?
Great pictures of the kid, the dog, the Fury, and the old building. But, does anyone live in your town? It looks like a ghost town. Reminds me of an episode or two of "The Twilight Zone". No other people on the street, no other cars on the street, and no other signs of life. Did they evacuate when they heard you were coming into town?
Even our little town has a few people wandering around almost anytime of day or night. Well staggering at nights. I believe that mean kid and that mean looking dog scared everyone off. Nice photos. Now I'm going to have to take a few pictures of that gas station way over in the next town. But even there the traffic is heavy thru that intersection.
I love old abandon gas stations. Would love to own one as my own personal shop and restore it to have a 40's - 50's look to it. One can dream.
I had a dream! Coincidently my birthday and another man's on same day both said that. However, before I retarded to Florida my dream was to buy an old gas station or small car dealership. We'd live upstairs or in back and restore, sell, and play with old cars in front. As we wandered around central Florida looking, and dreaming, we found too many others were already trying that dream. Most were either closed or not doing well. So we just kissed that dream goodbye. Less than a mile out on the main highway is an old Dodge dealership that's been mostly empty for the 18 1/2 years we've lived here. Still, that dealership is calling.
My wife is from Mt. Olive, IL and route 66 cuts through her home town (population 2000). Soulsby's Service Station is there and it's a great photo op:
I'll bet I've seen that place before. Illinois still has a bunch of empty gas stations. Some not in bad shape.
