    Welcome Richie!

Good luck in your wagon search. Don't be adverse to looking far and wide for the right wagon. There are quite a few folks here on the SWF who would be happy to check one out for you if it's in their area. That's what I did. The Safari you see pictured came from Wisconsin and a member here was kind enough to drive 100 miles or so to check it out for me.

Just be careful. More than one wagon on here was bought as a 'fun car' and it was too much fun, and became the daily driver. These old cars have a feel and a personality that no new car can match, and they are addictive! Make sure you buy one you can live with day to day, because you just might.

That said, if you are looking at the G.M. wagons, how big are you looking to go? The giant clam shells are beautiful to drive, and there are some really nice ones out there. The Buicks, in particular, are really lovely. They are my personal preference amongst the G.M. brands. Also the Buick engines seem to return better fuel economy than the others. More torque lower down in the revs would be my guess. And don't be put off by the 455. In reasonable driving, it gets better mileage than the 350 in the same big car. G.M. did a coast to coast run, using a pair of Buick LeSabre sedans, to prove it.

I hope, I hope, I hope!!! (Re: Buick 455 gas mileage)

Hi Mike T. and Station Wagon Lovers,

    Sorry to hijack this thread a little bit but . . . . . .

You don't know how happy your little post makes me!! :yahoo:

I'm waiting to install my custom-build big-block Buick engine which was purposely built for high fuel economy. Trouble is, it was something of a pilot project using some new technology that just became available for Buick engines (in particular hydraulic roller camshafts.)

With all the efficiency features, my new engine is a real beast, it produces a lot more power than I need. So I couldn't help but wonder, why didn't have a Buick 350 built with similar features?

I've been hoping that the big-block would at least be reasonably close to the same gas mileage. There were some components only available on the big-block like Stage-2 aluminum cylinder heads. So maybe I'll get 500 horsepower and still get the best gas mileage possible for a 60s-70s Buick engine.

    Cheers, Edouard

I had a 78 Buick Electra Limited 2 door (like 81X11' chocolate brown one) with the Buick big block 350. With a turbo 400 3 speed, no overdrive, and completely stock to the single exhaust, I did about 30 miles to the Imperial gallon, or about 24 to the U.S. gallon. With overdrive added, it would have been incredible. My 4bbl 350 gas used much less fuel than my organ teachers 98 Regency with the 350 diesel engine.
