The problem with that concept is that laws only affect the law-abiding. Even though we have laws against drugs, there are vast amounts of drugs available on the street. In reality, prohibitive law does not affect the availability of said prohibited item to a determined person. It only gives us a warm fuzzy feeling that we're doing something. Kind of like peeing in your pants really.
I know, .... just before our joke of a gun law came into effect, I remember our local news reporting that amunition was selling at a all time high, people were hording.........
I haven't been on the internet much since this happened. At my age I thought I'd seen and heard everything. There are no words that will make this go away. Some already say this is a plot to help enforce and create new gun laws. My main questions are how did a 20 year old with apparent mental problems get those weapons and his bulletproof vest? There are already laws concerning guns, ammo, and such vests. This proves that more laws will not save lives. Action and upholding the laws we have needs to be done. As for what happened, it's hard to imagine how those families are holding up.
cat, he had a tactical vest...not a bullet proof vest. besides... that doesnt cover your head. andy...i appreciate the northerly support! I am probably one of the most pro-gun people on this board. I carry a gun on me at all times, and i pray to God that i never have to pull it out except for fun on the range. I can give a solution right now. 1. everything jarius said! 2. allow an "in school response team" volunteer teachers that get civilian training from say the military or FBI. let them carry a concealed weapon. these would be the teachers that are the first responders. if that principal had a .380 in her pocket...this would have been over before it began. Tedy, the 2nd amendment had little to do with the British. It was put there to ensure the people could not be oppressed by a tyrannical government within our own borders. it is often misread.. Because a well regulated malitia was necessary to a free nation (i.e keep the country free from..the british etc) the right of the people to bare arms shall not be infringed. (that way people could keep the malitia in check) back in the early days of this country almost everybody had a gun. and door locks were almost non existent.
Well, I'm watching Diane's news show tonight and I'm even more convinced that the bulk of the responsibility(cause) of Friday's tragedy must rest on the shooter's mother's shoulders. She A) knew her son had personality issues AND was on a downward spiral because of them, B) had introduced this troubled child to semi automatic weapons, and C) had these weapons apparently available to him instead of locked away out of reach in a gun safe. I don't think we can legislate to prevent stupidity can we?
But the question lurking in the corner like a 500 pound gorilla is this: HOW MANY GUNS IS ENOUGH GUNS? :banghead3:
If you say "how many guns is enough" I say as many as you can afford. I own a few long guns and hand guns. I have a close friend who has more than 50 Why different guns? Different guns shoot differently and have different styles. Love the FNH Five-seveN it shoots a rifle round. Its great for longer range targets with a pistol. But it isn practical to carry for self defense. The Ruger LCP is a great self defense gun that fits in your pocket and and is not noticeable by those who freak out at the sight of a gun(when its concield it doesnt "print)". But theLCP is not fun at the range. Its light weight and small size make it inaccurate at long range and very uncomfortable to shoot. niether are good for shooting birds or sporting clays. That is where long guns come in.
My intent when starting this thread was to offer a moment of thought, and for those who wish, a chance to share their grief and shock at the horror that unfolded. Some of us at times need a comfortable place where we can share our sorrows and have the others just listen without challenging us. We aren`t going to win the gun debate here. In China on the same day 23 children at school were attacked by a knife. It was not my intent to start the conversation of weapons of any kind - we get enough of that constantly in every news cast, newspaper, television show, movie, most books it seems, all deal with violence to sell. In the meantime 28 families are devastated in this instance and the wingnuts continue with threats to blow up the church, protest the funerals - these families need our positive thoughts focused on them. Lets let the rest of the world argue for or against what ever weapon of choice the latest wingnut chooses, and bend our heads and think about all those people who were just stolen from our world. Just for a little moment, let the other stuff go, and maybe we can send enough positive energy their way that some of those kids and parents who will live with this forever will feel just a little bit safer and loved again.
All I will add is that This is an unspeakable tragedy. I have my own opinions, but will keep them to myself. My outlook on life changed when we had our first child. That in itself causes me to look at this type of thing in an entirely different light then I ever did before. My prayers are for the families. They are often.
I don't have any wife, girlfriend or children and most likely never will. So I can't begin to fathom what their families are going through now. I own two handguns myself. And that's all I'm going to say about that. But 65 million of us legal gun owners didn't kill anybody yesterday.
