Just got my first vintage wagon, a near mint ltd 2 squire with just over 21000 miles... If anyone's an expert on these please let me know... I have a few things not working... Thanks!
i cant tell you much, but i know the ltd 2 wagon was only made for 1 year and the mercury cougar wagon is basically the same car with half the production numbers the ltd 2 had. Glad you got you first vintage wagon and great to hear there is another ltd 2 out there
Hmm.....I didn't know they were 1 year only. I had a 78 LTD II Squire wagon, lost it to my ex-wife in a divorce. Great car!
I'll take some pics after I put my dash back together, I started taking it apart to see what's wrong with the radio and hopefully the tailgate window motor, but I didn't get far, I've never seen one so hard to get into...
Seems to be a bit of that going around. Congrats with your purchase. What kinda problems are you having?
Back window is the big one. I can hook the motor to a car battery and make it go down, but it is too weak to go back up. But neither the dash switch nor the key do anything. I can get replacement motors from several websites, but not sure what to do about the switch. Also, I started taking the dash apart, but could not get to the radio, which also does not work, or the switch for the window. Looks like the gauge cluster has to come out, but I would be afraid to attempt to unhook the speedometer cable for fear of breaking it.
I had never heard of this car before I found this one. If my suspicions are correct, I may have the only one in Georgia, and I'm willing to bet there are very few anywhere, and probably fewer in this condition. I'll get some pics up soon.
If you have the factory radio, removal is quite easy. There is likely one nut on the back of the radio holding it to a support bracket. Unto that. Pull the tuning and volume knobs off the shafts, then the rings behind. They pull straight off, although the centre knobs MAY have spring clips holding them on. If so be careful to save them as they are unobtainium now. There is a retaining nut at the base of each shaft, holding the unit to the cross-dash brace. Use a deep socket to unto these. Then slide the radio back through the holes in the dash and it will drop down. Keep in mind, Classic Autosound makes a modern head unit that will slide right into the existing dash mount with no cutting or trimming of anything, including the wiring harness. That will allow you AM/FM as well as CD and an MP3/USB port for connecting modern media to it. If you have any other questions about these cars, just ask. I know most things about them, since Nora is my 4th Thunderbird of this same generation. They are terrific cars, and very easy to work on. Parts are also dirt cheap.
Here are some pics I already have... I may have some interior pics from where I bought it, but I'll have to look later. Gotta go to work!
A little description, It's a light gray color (looks like it was changed over from metallic silver), blue vinyl interior is almost brand new, wood sides were faded but I restained them, has tilt, working AC, roll up windows, AMFM stereo with eight track (not working), third row seat, 351 modified. Shows 21k on the odometer, not sure of actual miles, but I believe it to be correct. I even have the original sales document showing the original owner paid over $9k in 1977!
