That looks like a pretty sweet lifting set up to me, Jeff.

No pics, but when I was 20, I changed the rear shocks on my wagon with just a bumper jack and one brick. :slap:

Our oldest son, around 18 back then, did the same. We came home and there in the street his 59 Pontiac was jacked fully to the top of that bumper jack and he was under it shaking the car trying to get a shock off. I politely told him to get ^@*+ out from under there. Then I gently kicked the jack and watched the barge come tumbling down. Kids!!! Geeeeeze!:slap: Pictures a 11.

Getting a 5000 lb vehicle high enough off the ground to pull a trans and driveline is a high pressure venture with any type of lifting equipment. That moment when only a floor jack supports all that weight and you crawl under to put in jackstands is always a blood pumper to me. The Shwag is currently on two ramps and 3 jackstands, but I have found myself in need of the ramps for oil changes...sounds like I need to bust out the rest of my jackstands...:hmmm:

I know we joke about safety and things we did that were not real smart. But safety first is really important. Stop, think, and be careful.
Hopefully others will learn from our mistakes.

Having lost a fellow we knew in school to no jackstands and being under the car, I've been absolutely religious about putting jack stands under anything that can come down. It was a big motivator for getting the hoist, and even with that I do a walk around every time to ensure the safeties are locked in place on each post before I walk under it.

You absolutely have to know that if "it" can happen, it will............and just think of how messy the underside of your car will be........

This alone is reason enough to be careful. We don't want the next guy getting a dirty car or garage !

I'm sure we've all known people crushed or badly injured by falling cars. At least heard about someone in your town. The older we get the more careful we are. So let's help get the word out to those young car guys and gals who are filling our shoes. My wife hates to see blood.

The thing I do most often it seems is to walk in to my hoist :banghead3:

Couple of times I've actually gotten up off the floor with a different song on the radio than the one I was humming to as I was walking toward the tool box:49:

At least with a cap on the damage is fairly contained - I just toss the hat in the washer when my DW is not home and clean it up (inside and out).

Saf: We're going to have to take up a collection and make you a hard hat that looks like a ball cap! Or get you a motorcycle helmet. Something. We need you around here. We don't need you with scrambled brains!

I've always been careful about holding up the car when I'm under there. Wish I did have room for a hoist, but in the mean time, I have the solid rubber ramps, and I use jack stands all the time.

I would give very very vital body parts for a lift...I always keep my eye open (with my job) for a used one at a good price.

Thanks Mike - as for the scrambled part, my DW would suggest that it is way too late :rofl2:

One nice thing with the hoist is cleaning my wheels. I lift the wagon to chest height, sit on a stool, place my pop on the rail, and clean away.

Saf, you remind me of one of my Dad's lame jokes: "What did the chicken say when she saw scrambled eggs?":biglaugh:

A really good friend of mine asked me to give him a hand painting a really big house in north vancouver, 91 windows very tricky. I couldnt help him as i had a job of my own. He told me he had scaffolding and it would be quick but high. As he was taking down the top stage he fell in between the house and the scaffolding and they said he was dead as soon as he hit the ground. He was wearing a harness but wasnt hooked up. All of a sudden i started thinking of the stupid things i was doing to cheat time. I once put a 40 ft ladder on top of a 6 ft fence and had the biggest guy hang off the ladder so i could get to a chimney on the roof. I never fell but??? We have a commercial here that says what was i thinking. Have a word with yourself. Its a funny story if all gos right. Slow down and have a tailgate meeting in your mind before you do stupid things. My friend mike is at all my tailgate meetings.thanks for being safe.
