OK - looking up the bolt pattern for my '81 Safari.
Found a website that basically indicated all box wagons had a 5 X 4.75 wheel bolt pattern, except if they had the Olds 403 engine in them (if so, it said those got the 5 X 5.00 bolt pattern wheels.

    Is this correct?

    Mine's only got the 307.
Also, if I was looking to go with say 16" alloys, what kind of backspacing would I use?

I'm no expert, but my 84 Delta 88 2-door with the 307 had the 5X4.75. My 78 Electra 2 door with the X-code 350 Buick engine had the 5X5 bolt pattern. Going with the 16 inch wheel makes perfect sense. You have a huge selection of really good to great tires, where the 15 inch selection is horrible now. My next tire purchase will be the Pirelli P6, in a 225/60R16 on 16 inch wheels of some sort. I give up on the current crop of 15s. The Sumitomo was SUPPOSED to be good. Let's say they are a big disappointment!

Correct, wagons used the 5x5 pattern. You CAN find big bolt pattern Pontiac Rally II wheels. Had them on our 78 Grand Safari and 67 Executive. Also most of the chrome Buick Road Wheels are 5x5.

Just so you know, GM uses the 5x5 pattern on 5-bolt GM trucks too. The chrome SS454/Sport wheels from the 1990's look sharp on boxy wagons!

Glad I checked with you guys. I thought I remembered somebody here saying they were 5X5.

I'll be looking for a nice set of rallys. Don't particularly like the snowflake wheels, but we'll see......

Also might look for what could fit in a 16" size.

I seem to remember that Oldsmobile had some nice looking wheels that would fit your Poncho.
I'm not a fan of the Pontiac 'snowflake' wheels either.
Back in the day, I didn't like the Buick wheels much, but I sure would love to have a set on my Buick Estate now!
Those five spoke chrome steelies are SO BUICK that they would look out of place on a Pontiac or Chevy, IMHO.
I wonder if anyone still sells chrome 'reverse' steel wheels? With baby moon caps, an old box could shine big time.:1st:

Your safest bet would be to measure the back spaceing once you have the car...take a wheel off and measure, then you will know. A good shop that sells rims should not have a problem doing this for you so you get what is correct.:)....ummer some times with newer bling bling wheels, your choises may be limited because of spacing.

WOW....KK is gona Donk his wagon....116 inch wheels!...........:rofl2:

I agree. I think they are beautiful wheels, but they scream "Buick!" and would not look right on your Pontiac.

I've sat and pondered this...thinking what would accentuate your new Pontiac.

I like the Buick Estate wheels that RatMaster has, converting the center caps to Pontiac caps...see the page below...

    http://www.stationwagonforums.com/forums/showthread.php?p=207752

You could also consider the wire wheels that were available on Cadillac fullsize RWD cars from 1980-92...they would fit. I'm sure you could find a Pontiac center cap to go on it (hopefully).

It's kinda fun dreaming about how to fix up someone else's car...:)

EDIT: BTW...I have a Hollander book for wheels and one for wheel covers...I can look some stuff up.

So far, the winner is the Pontiac Rallys. I agree as well about the Buick wheels. Just wouldn't look right. I'll be living with the wagon the way it is for a while.

I think that is a misprint. In the description below the wheel it calls out a 4-3/4 lug pattern. Looking up that part number in their catalog also indicates the 4-3/4 lug pattern.
