Here is how to fix that tank on the cheap.
    1; remove the tank
    2: remove any gas
3; pour in some water. couple gallons aughta do. and a little dish soap too.
4; Find some pea gravel and put it in the tank. four or five double hand fulls.
5; shake the tank. right side up and upside down all around. don't shirk your duties. do this for at least an hour.
6; remove everything in the tank.
7; rinse well and then let it dry.
8; buy some tank epoxy(35 dollars or so?)
9; Sloosh it around the tank. another 1/2 hour
10; let it dry and reinstall the tank.

Removes the rust and you have a nice epoxy seal

That sending unit looks pretty bad. Unkldave may be right and it will come with a float as well and already wired up.
I understand wanting to do somethings yourself though. If you decide to go the route of doing it yourself, look into a plastic float. I have heard of the brass floats not liking Ethanol.

If you don't want to shake the tank with the water and gravel in it and you have a washer that isn't balanced well. Maybe duct tape it to the washer and it will shake it for you.

I would not say those are beyond repair, but it would be a better move to get a nos from ebay. Let your pride take a hit on this one and but a new one. Don't want any shorts in the fuel tank you know!!!
