How long does it take it to get hot? If it is getting hot within 5 minutes you may have a large amount of air trapped in the system. I have not had this occur on an older vehicle but did on a newer one after changing the water pump. It was a head-scratcher! The fix was removing the top radiator hose and filling the block directly while running, allowing the system to "burp". Again, I have not experienced this on older vehicles. As far as the radiator, have you ran it from cold without the cap up to "hot" condition parked, visually monitoring the water flow in the radiator after thermostat opens?

Gotta agree. A 351 would really perk it up some and they are all over the junk yards for cheap.

Glad to hear you got the overheating sorted. My 390 Gal is doing the exact same thing. I had started to suspect the old distributor and points, and then found plastic bits in the oil pan from what I believe to be the timing gears. Hoping that those two things will improve matters greatly.

I'm also thinking my 351C has finally eaten up the distributor and think I will drop a TFI system in there along with the TBI conversion this winter. And if that doesn't do it, I'll sell the TBI/TFI stuff to someone else and drop in a diesel Mercedes engine. I know for sure I can get a Mercedes to 700R4 (200-4R) adapter and there are people who claim to make Mercedes to Ford manual adapters, and with the right flexplate they could work for an automatic as well.

good luck with that. These things are worth keeping around. Even if they cost a few thousand pennies here an there

Occupant: I KNOW you can get an adapter to connect the mechanical AOD to any Ford engine you care to name. There is a place in Minnesota that makes them. I cannot for the life of me remember the name, nor can I find the phone number anymore.
