I hadn't seen this until today. Apologies if it has already been talked about. A '76 Olds Custom Cruiser was sold at the Barrett-Jackson auction in Orange County, California back in June. It had no reserve and sold for $9,075. I can do without the wheels, but that's me. You so rarely see these wagons at all, I was surprised to see a clamshell sold at an auction. Kind of cool. More photos and info are here: http://www.barrett-jackson.com/application/onlinesubmission/lotdetails.aspx?ln=328&aid=464
I bet the wheels added money to the car at the auction, but yep, I hate them too. That car is CRYING for some Olds SuperStock 4 wheels. They look so good on these! http://oldsjunction.classicoldsmobile.com/ssiv.html
That's just about the worst woodgrain vinyl application I've ever seen. The grain match between panels is nonexistent and it looks like they used short pieces that all had the identical wild grain pattern.
We had a thread on this one in August when it was on E-bay. Our opinions on the value seemed to be spot-on. http://www.stationwagonforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=20410&highlight='76+Custom+Cruiser
Just remember that you can never judge how much a car is worth because " I saw one on Barrett Jackson go for $xxxxx." As a body man by profession statements like those drive me up the wall. There is so many variables to those auctions it makes the prices very unrealistic. Just my 2 cents but opinions are like ass holes. . .
I agree..... You've also got a select group of potential buyers - all of whom have plenty of money. Plus the auction scenario increases the competition and the 'emotion' component. With E-bay, the seller limits the action. As auctions go, I don't think this one sold at a surprisingly high price - could have gone for much more. I'll bet the seller was a bit disappointed.
Okay I'm going to be the black sheep here again, but I kinda like the look of this car. The dark green wood grain and yes even the wheels go together well in my wildley unpopular opinion.
The colour and the stance are terrific. That wood is a great colour, but the installation is pitiful. Those wheels and tires are, to me, way out of the ball park. My bet is that the thing handles worse than stock! There is too much rim, not enough tire. people forget, metal weighs more than air, and unsprung weight is the enemy!
