I have searched the forum but can't see where this topic has been discussed before. (Although it seems hard to believe it!) In the 60s, the movies and the big three's sales ads all portrayed wagons as the ultimate beach vehicle. Big enough for your boards and a crowd of friends - with enough power to drive on the beach. So there must be tons of pictures of old wagons on the beach with Frankie and Annette! Let's see those crazy Beach Wagons :2_thumbs_up_-_anima
Check out the "Wagons in vintage street scenes" thread. Among the thousands of pics there, you will see many beach wagons.
What is sad is that the little blonde on the back of this wagon is probably someone's grandmother now
No what's really sad is the rest of em are really OLD dudes now and there was only one girl. She probably fell off when that rope tightened up and the wagon raised up in front as it ground to a stop. The rear end got yanked out of the wagon and it was towed off to be junked. The driver's dad was upset because his son "borrowed" the family wagon and they had to start walking to work and the grocery store. Then the police zoned the beach "no vehicle access" from then on. How do I know? I was the kid waving at the photographer.
That's kind of how I designed my wagon to look. Like it was heading for the beach. No pics yet of it ON the beach. Both times I have been there with it, it rained. No $ to make the drive right now with gas at $4.00 a gallon here in Oregon. I call mine "Surf Rat" and I drive it every day. It's my only means of transportation and I get a ton of thumbs up from passersby. I am also an artist so... I have a few Beach wagons I can show you if you don't mind. More as I find them. This is a wagon theme I can get behind!
Jairus I love your artwork and your wagon. I have two surf boards but rarely hang them in or on our Chevy. And my Hula girl died from the heat while sitting in the garage. What's left of her is red and white.
You know, I just took another look at the Falcon wagon / 23 kids pic. That screams 'California', right? NOPE - it's in Florida! Probably makes more sense. You don't see too many vehicles driving on California beaches, unless they are lifeguard vehicles. At least in most of Southern California, the 'hard sand' area where you could drive is usually not too wide anyway. And it's illegal most everywhere. Got to go to Pismo Beach....
What's truly sad is the manner in which that poor little '62 Falcon 2-door wagon is overloaded, and that if it stayed in Florida, it probably turned to Swiss cheese.
Back then it was "just an old wagon." And I feel I do agree that this was taken in Florida. Most likely near Flagler Beach. What appears to be two heads in the water ahead is really a shark ready to attack those kids when they hang ten. I vaguely remember reading in the Daytona News in 1975 about a large number of teens being eaten alive and vanishing. All that was left was some small Ford wagon with tooth marks all over it. The proof is that the ocean is on the right side. If this were the left coast the ocean would of course be on the left. This can be verified on both Snoops and Yahoo.
someday i hope to have enough scratch to have jarius or mark do a color scetch of my wagon under some palms on the beach.
