Im going to get a new engine soon for my wagon. what size engines does ford make that have good power and i could find in a junkyard or from a used car parts place. i want get an engine 302ci-around 400ci. ok thanks
I could be wrong but I think the Ford 400 was a big block and the 351 is a small block. Either that or I'm thinking of GM. The 351 should be an easy swap.
Well a guy a know has a 351 in his 71 mustang and that thing will throw you in the back seat! It's all stock.
For the small blocks, easiest option, you have the choice of the Windsor in 302ci or 351ci, also known as 5.0 and 5.8. Note the 5.0 was used in late model Mustangs as the 5.0 HO. I should also add there is a 347ci version based on the 5.0/302 which has a shorter deck height then the 351 which means it's shorter and narrower then the 351. These engines are the most common being built from the 1960s all the way to 2000, 347ci in Australia. They were also used in trucks and vans. If emmissions are a problem then these are your only option. The other option is the Cleveland in 351ci and 302ci. IF you find a 302ci Cleveland, leave it where it is as it was only used here in Australia. The Cleveland was the high performance engine and only lasted a couple of years until it was outlawed due to emmissions. The last Clevelands were built in Australia in 1983, although rumour has it some were cast as late as 1985 for use in the DeTomaso Pantera. The down side is while it developes some serious power, they are fragile and need some TLC to live. And they are heavy, I can't recall the figure but the Windsor is some what lighter. And with the amount of developement on the Windsor, the only reason why you would play with the Clevo is if you need one. The third option is the 351M and 400M, which I understand is a truck version of the Cleveland which shares some bits from the small block Cleveland and the big block engines.
I like the 302's. There are plenty of them and you can find any kind of performance part you can think of.
Actually the 302 is only 4.9L. They just called it a 5.0 because it sounded better. A true 5.0L would be no less than 305cid. Also the 351 is still 5.7L, just like GM's 4 different 350's(Buick, Pont., Chev., & Olds. all made their own version of the 350 s.b. for a time ). You don't actually reach 5.8L until you have a 355cid.
Ford Australia used 4.9 for the 302ci Cleveland between 1979 and 1983. When they reintroduced the V8 in 1993, they called it a 5.0, EFI 302ci Windsor as used in Mustang. Interestingly, the limited production stroker was called either 5.7 or 347ci depending which model it was fitted to! I also understand at least 1 brochure actually doesn't give it a capacity at all, simply calling it the 5.0 stroker.
Wagonmaster, is that your red '57 Buick wagon that keeps popping up from time to time? If it is, or whoever it belongs to, it is one fine ride.
