    hi all
today i fixed the clamshell tailgate on my 75 Grand Safari.
Open and close works fine with the switch on the back.
the switch for the window on the dashboard works also fine.
only the switch for the tailgate have no fuction.
i change the switch, yes a new one;), but no reaction.
    now i need a wiring diagram ?
    can anyone help me ?
    thanks
    Klaus

One thing to remember is that the tailgate switch on the dashboard operated differently from the dashboard power window switch. The window switch operates whenever the ignition key is in the ACC or ON position. But the tailgate motor can be operated from the dash switch only when the key is ON and the car is in Park. If you've just been putting the key in the ACC position and seeing if the tailgate works from the dash switch, you'll never see it work.

Make sure that you're doing the above when testing the tailgate switch. If it still doesn't work, there is also a relay that the switch connects to before the wiring heads back to the rear of the car, and you'll want to find and possibly replace that relay. The best way to find the relay is to pull the switch out of the dash (it just pulls forward with a good tug), and then tug on the wires while watching what moves under the dash and see where the wires coming specifically from the switch go. You'll probably find it easier to do this if you remove the lower part of the dash so you can get a better view up under there.

All of the above applies to my '73 Olds Custom Cruiser, and I'm assuming the basic operation and wiring was the same for all years and all makes of the GM clamshell wagons.

    hi,
i think the fail is located.
behind the switch i find a relay.
the wiring diagram says: N/O Relay or N/Q Relay
what have this relay for a function ?
the power comes in to the relay with the orange/black wire, this is ok and works.
but no output in the red/white wire to switch.
can i use a another relay or bridge that thing ?
    thx for help;)

I happen to have a 75 Pontiac shop manual in the garage. I'll bring it in tomorrow and see what I can find. If I've got what you need I'll PM you.

If you have already sent him what he needs let me know so I don't replicate the effort Steve-E-D. Hopefully you had what he needs.

a big thanks to all here in this forum, esp. Steve !!
    the tailgate switch works now:yahoo:
    the relay have 3 wires
    orange/black to fusebox
    white/red to tailgate switch
and last but not least the black one.
i think first, the black one is the ground, but this is not so.
the black one is a power leed to ignition and this one was broken.

in the engine bay on the firewall i find exactly the same relay. what have this relay to do ??

    thanks again

    greets
    Klaus
