Yikes! This is going to take a whole lot of buffing! Everything looks to be there with this wagon though? Looks like it will be great fun if you've got the time and energy for the tasks ahead. Thanks for posting up the pics Rob. Keep us informed.
That looks good! You sure got a lot of cleaning work to do! Have you already got a service manual? You can also download one here: http://www.mymopar.com/index.php?pid=109 I like the car very much. Is there very much rust? Doesn't look like it. How is the fuel tank? I hope it's not too far gone, because it's very hard to find another one. Congrulations with your project. Martyx.
I do have the service manual and the body has minimal rust but the rear floor pans and third seat floor pan are toast. I found some from someone in the midwest for $ 600.00. As for the gas tank it to is toast has a hole in it, found one of those too though for $ 190.00 I am still trying to get the doors open so I can at lest clean the interio out a little. Its going to take a lot of work
That is a crazy thing about the doors. I remember the other post. You will have fun with this project. I like getting vehicles in this condition. You will be surprised how soon you can drive it; showing it, well... it is not a race.
Great to see you save this bit of Chrysler history. Those beautiful Elwood Engel lines worked so well on the big Chryslers and Imperials. His signature cues are those well groomed slab sides and fender 'blades' that run forward of the grille. He's the guy who'd penned the '61 Lincolns timeless lines as well as a few of my other favorite Ford designs of the late 50's, early '60s. you sure have your work 'cut' out for you, keep us posted.
Got the rear doors opened today, had to get inside and hold handle whil repeatedly kicking the door. The drivers door and front passenger are going to take a little more work - I have the door panels removed and can see the mechanisms are quite rusty - PB Blaster evry few days and eventually they shoud work. Surpisingly the door jams and the sill plates are not rotted as I though they would have been, the floor however.................well lets not go there.
If it were me.... and I'm just talking about MY approach.. I'd start systematically taking it apart piece by piece.. catalog and photo everything for when you put it back together. This project .. to do it right.. needs to be completely disassembled. Everything is there so that makes it easier to do when it comes time to put it back together. At least you don't have to chase down parts. Upholstery, electrical, glass, seals.. I mean everything needs to be gone through and refurbished. Huge project, huge reward at the end. Looks like fun! Just don't be in a hurry and you'll do fine.
I still have 3 doors to go though.............!!!!The tailgate is rusted on the outside but I think it is just on the surface.
At 73 Super, I do not have a garage at this time but that would be my plan if I did. I currently am just messing around here and there with the wagon. My next goal is to get he beast running and hopefully in due time can get my garage put up and take the ar apart piece by piece. I am in no means in any hurry. This would be my first restoration and i would want to do it right. The majority of the interior vinyl will need to be replaced Thanks for the input
Have you already got a windshield? there's a NOS one on craigs, but it's a little expensive:http://boise.craigslist.org/pts/3059650881.html
