This just goes along with what I've been saying for a long time. The trick to mileage is to have enough torque low down that you can cruise out of the power band easily. The stock 350 can be improved even further using the SuperChips performance tuning, but select the tow/haul settings. Gives a nice bump in the low end torque. Also, the exhaust system can be upgraded as well. At the least a better muffler makes a difference, although using the 'double hump' cross member from the Impala SS allows for a real, true dual exhaust system that improves things even further. You should be able to get into the low to mid 30s with it.

When it comes to tires, I used to run the BF Goodrich Comp T/A HR-4 at their max pressure of 44 psi. My last summer tires were Pirelli P3000, in a P225/70R15. On my 92 Crown, they managed to give me a consistent 100 kms more per tank than the Daytonas that were on it when I bought it. I'm now running a set of Sumitomos in the same size, but since they are a 51 psi tire, that's where I run them. So far, they are excellent, too. Quiet, great grip, and the mileage seems higher, too.

yep ... gas milage is basically the lowest throttle position you can maintain in your highest gear.

ive talked to a several guys over the years who own/run dynos and they all have said that considering the extreem low RPMs using the low throttle/high gear that power gains with exhaust upgrades would be almost non-exsistant using the stock factory manifolds.

my yokos (extra loads) will tke 41 lbs ... i run about 37 since they hold the car fine without much ride comprimise. the michelin tires will take 50lbs but with 50 lbs they ride hard and still dont get the milage the yokos get with 37 or even what my previous Telstart Weatherizer tires did @42 (but would take 44).
the weatherizers werent that great i the hard rains.

My brother had an 86 Colony Park (351, Trailer Tow III) that had about 150,000 miles on it. Someone had cheaped out and put a single exhaust on it. Once he got the 2 bbl VV carb working right, it was using about 10L/100Km, or 28 MPG (Imperial). He swapped out the single for a custom 2 a/4 inch duals with FlowMaster DeltaFlows and new custom cats. Fuel consumption dropped to 7L/100Km, which is 40 MPG (Imperial) That is with the factory 2.73:1 limited slip, and everything else completely stock. It improved further once he did a few more things to the old girl. He never did get around to changing the factory exhaust manuals. It was still turning in that kind of mileage when it went to the scrap yard at just shy of 500,000 miles, everything original. My point is that even with factory manifolds, the breathing downstream does make a big difference, especially in the "X" crossover which increases scavenging nicely.

ran to Murfreesboro TN wed night. did my best to see if i could get even better mpg.... well i did, 31.399mpg...with Missouri highway patrol on my bumper for 130 miles @52-ish mph... they must have thought i was runnin drugs....more on that later.
i am in decatur Il right now and got 29.1 on the way here doin about 52-55 with a little wind blowing around.
heading to murfreesboro again as soon as i get home and loaded (the car, not me). the trip will be driven about 70-80 mph so im not looking for great economy on that run. i wont be updating this post again till probably mon or tuesday or later. i see a few days of sleep in my near future.

Friday night I had to run a casket to Des Moines from KC.
No wind to deal with and the outside temp was 55 degrees @ 3am.
As i drove i rechecked the differences between the trip odometer and the mile markers so I could make the correct calcs when I filled up.
Driving about 51- 56 mph and once again with a stupid missouri highway patrol about 40 ft off my rear bumper for around 50 miles of it. He never pulled me over, just stuck behind me.
ANYWAY... when I filled up I was shocked that my mpg number was even better than the Wentzville Mo trip.
    32.46 MPG!!!
Then on the way home when it was windy, I set the cruise control on 75 mph and got 22.934 MPG.

i think carrying a big ol' ziplock freezer bag full of powdered sugar with me to throw out the window when the fuzz is tailgaiting might be fun....
i aint never had a litterin' ticket.
and then have a bloody necktie dangling from the closed casket door too.... there aint any crime in that.
