And I had a blast! I was out this weekend with my local SCCA chapter for our first race of the season. Naturally, I brought my Caprice along. Now keep in mind that my car is bone dead stock: everything is factory and a good deal of it new. They bizarrely classed me in F Stock, which is where cars such as Mustang GTs, 94-96 Impala SS', and new BMW 5series hang out. I was hopelessly out-classed, but I still had a blast and was within four seconds of a Mustang GT and a BMW 5 series; two seconds of a pair of Imprezas which were of the non-WRX variety. Still, not too shabby for a 307! As a bonus, the car was a HUGE hit with people. Most thought I was crazy or the coolest person there! Wagons rock. It's that simple.

Anyway, here's some pictures. I should have more later as people post them, and hopefully a video; the club put a camera on my car for one of the runs!

That looks like a LOT of fun! I see you have whitewalls. What kind are they? I know Sumitomo, last year, had a "H" rated high performance white wall in a 225/70R15, similar to the old BFG Comp T/A, and that is what I wanted. Worse luck they stopped making them, which is why I am now on blackwall T rated tires. They are good, but not that extreme edge for handling. I love the whole idea of all of that autocrossing, though. Go forth and conquer!

Thanks guys! Yeah, I am a bit crazy! The tires are just your basic Mastercrafts; it was about all I could find in 225-75-15 that still retained the whitewall, which is what I wanted. These tires really held me back, as I was definitely hitting their limits pretty early. I am thinking about getting a set of Roadmaster wagon wheels and putting some stickier tires on them; I think that would help bring me down a bit time-wise. Impala SS wheels would be nice, but I can't seem to find them anywhere.

When it comes to wheels, you have ALL SORTS of options. Wheel Vintiques makes a variety of classic style wheels in modern sizes. I believe they make the Chevrolet Rally Wheel in a 16X7, and possibly in a 17 as well. THAT would look really trick.

I gave up looking for good whitewalls. Grip and handling are more important, since the Thunderbird is my daily driver, and I run almost 30,000 miles a year. The Sumitomos are, so far, very good indeed. Wish I have bought them last year, though, when I could have had a set of whitewall 225/70R15 98H high performance summer tires. Oh, well. I'm saving up now for a set of Magnum 500s in a 16X7.
