I was just offered one for free with no tranny, and I can't find any brand on it. It's a Slant Inline 4-banger, with a Points distributor. Anyone got any ideas? Cast aluminum head, and a really narrow cast valve cover. It looks like DOHC or SOHC belt-driven.

    Maybe it's Japanese?

It has to be foreign. But I've got too much on my plate right now. If it was Ford inline 4, I'd grab it, but Ford would have their logo all over it.

This thing is so small I could put it in the Squire's spare tire well. I'll take a stroll up the back alley tomorrow and check it out for some clues. My neighbour (really thin but strong) brought it up for a lady from her basement, by himself. It might weigh 200 lbs, maybe. I'd say more like 175 or 150 lbs.

Did some brief research on this.
You've got at least 3 possibilities, probably a lot more.

    1. Saab - Their Saab 99 model from the late 60's - early 70's had a slant 4. It was also the same engine put into the Triumph TR7. (Saab and Triumph engineered it together)

    2. Vauxhall - Not sure what it was used in, but was said to have a toothed rubber belt driving a SOHC

    3. The aforementioned Pontiac. Used in the '61 - '63 Tempest, it was the right half of a Pontiac 389 V8. No OHC on this one.Interesting car, that Tempest. Had a flexible one-piece driveshaft going to a rear mounted transmission and differential - and independent rear suspension.

Number 1 or 2. It has what looks like a Stromberg carb. it also has a toothed belt driving the cam in the head casting. I'll search the SAAB 99 first. Thanks.

It could be a "red block" from Volvo? They were used throughout a lot of Volvo's from end 70's (78?). Offered as 2.0, 2.1 and 2.3 liter.

Correction: These had all fuel injection, so no go. The B18 engine was used from 61 to 68 and was delivered with either single or double Stromberg carbs. No OHC though.....

Looks like its one of the various Vauxhall/Opel engine (option 2) or an Asian engine. The SAAB/Triumph's valve cover is too wide and shaped on the top, whereas this one is a cast aluminum cover with angular edges and it's wedge shaped to look flush and level when inside the Eng. Comp.

Peppy little motors (74 HP and 105 ft. lbs torque). Still popular in the UK and Australia. It may have even been used in Isuzus.

It's just the head that's alloy. The tranny mount is just 4 bolts. I'll go check in 20 minutes or so.

And I found a decent picture. From a site in Holland, no less! Senri? Need a good engine? Free! You pay the shipping! Let me know, I'll pick it up. No transmission or transaxle, sorry.
