Been having a small coolant leak in my 95 RMW (LT1) for some time that I can't locate. Due to the age of the car I replaced all hoses and water pump. Still have the leak and can't see where it is coming from. Seems to be coming from the right side but can't tell for sure. I used thread sealer on the bolts and checked all hoses and the thermostat housing??? Any ideas!!
From my old memory banks, I believe that there is a freeze plug behind, and slightly above the starter on that block. Hard to see until you get the starter out of the way. Not a fun job to replace.
You say "ALL" hoses does that mean you replace heater hoses and the clamps too? The plasitic "T" fittings and the coolant tank are on that side as well. My 96 roadmaster has had leaks like that and i found that one of the plastic fitting became brittle and cracked. Hope this helps a bit take care Dan
Takes it somewhere and get it pressure tested if you're not sure, leaks can be very deceiving as to their origins.
Freeze plugs, all T's and hoses look ok. When I took the old pump off the lower left bolt wasn't the tightest (from someone's previous install) so I thought that was probably it, but made sure, or thought I made sure I had plenty of gasket sealer on the bolt when i put the new one on. I also replaced the water pump and opti seals on the timing cover plus now I'm fixing the power steering pump seals cause it was leaking some:banghead3:. I used the Permatex No.2 nonharding gasket maker on the bolts. Should I be using somthing else? thanks for the replies!! If it still leaks after this I'll have to take like Moto said and have it pressure tested.
After trying to find a leak for over a year, on my '90 'burban w/190k, I finally said "F-it" and used a can of Bars Leak! Gone!!
Bars leak is BAD stuff!!! It clogs up heater cores and radators. Only use that stuff if the car is on it's last leg and your not keeping it for too long.
There are additives that you can add to the cooling system. After putting them in and running the motor, you take a blacklight and shine it over and around the motor. Wherever it's leaking will show up under the light.
