Not really how I wanted to get them though. I bought new gears and an install kit (pinion and diff bearings, etc) the other week because it's been making a horrible racket. Pulled the rear apart to find the pinion chipped in multiple spots and the inner race on one side of the diff was spinning and destroyed the trac-lock unit. All the bearings were pretty much toast. So, I ordered a Detroit True Trac diff last night and hopefully get it back together friday so I can race saturday. Mind you I had the rear built in 1998 and this is the second car it's been in. It's got about 200K on it. That 200K included about a thousand drag passes, and hundred or so autocross runs, and lots of other abuse over the last 10 years...
Not letting you near my rearend! 200K AND the Drags! You're lucky it didn't die as a regular car differential. You must build them good though.
Did I mention the gears were warranty replacements from Ford (the ones that got replaced) and the Trac lock was used? They did pretty well for the abuse that the cars were subjected to. Technically it's car #3 the rear has been in. Counting the orginal car it was out of. I've replaced the individual axles a few times too. I chunked one up last year autocrossing.
Well, it's back together. Drove it a few hundred miles between fri and sat. Picked up my bud from the airport with it. First time back in the states in 23 months. Saturday was some auto-x, which almost didn't happen. I blew the heatercore friday , and it got really bad on the way to the race staurday morning. So, I parked it and let it cool off, then bypassed the heatercore. New diff is great. Works well, and the gears got rid of the horrilbe clunks and whines that I was having. Good work! I was wondering, maybe it just me, but in your video it looks like you are more drifting (having oversteer) then before. Is this right?
Not really, I was hanging it out more on purpose and it was easieer because the tires were overheated. It' actually understeers more now with the new diff. The autocross I did a few weeks back I really could get the car to oversteer very easily without the throttle.
