Been looking for a second car for backup so I can work on selling the truck. Most people say to e-mail for info or to see the cars. But.. never a reply.. or you get one several days later giving you days you can check it out.. you instantly reply figuring they're still at the computer.. and no reply for several days again. This is my first time trying to get a car off Craigslist and its absolutely maddening.. WTF is wrong with people?! Am I alone here or is this typical? Sure as heck when I list my truck it'll be to SELL IT, my cell number will be in the listing... and I'll also check my e-mail several times a day!
Happened to me with 8 of the 10 cars I emailed about when I was searching for my last wagon. I would say it is beyond maddening!
I'm running into the same sort of issues. I am looking for a very specific vehicle. There are a few "for sale" nationally and I have contacted the sellers to get additional information. They don't have additional pictures available and, when asked for more detailed photos of specific items/areas, it is taking WEEKS to get the pictures. I assume they have prospective local buyers and they are not interested in an out-of-state buyer like me... But it also seems like they have listed these vehicles just to test the market; they certainly don't act like enthusiastic, motivated sellers. Too weird.... I was discussing this exact topic with a friend of mine earlier today. He said that he just makes a very low offer early in the process, then waits for a call back. In most cases, he gets the cars for less than half the asking price!
Hell I don't even want to ask a million questions.. just give me a damn time to meet you with cash in hand to look it over! It is crazy.. have 4 i'm trying to connect with now.. guess the first to finally get back to me sells their car.. but yea i'm not sure any of them actually want to. Well Thanks the one poster for not returning my mails I sent right after you posted your ad. But at least you just deleted your post to let me know it was sold.. I guess Why did e-bay have to drive everyone to craigslist with their damn fees.. it's impossible to find.. well get anyone to answer me back in my price range
I found my dad a '54 chevy P/u on craigslist this morning and the guy had his number on the ad but won't answer his phone. I left a e-mail telling him to call my dad he is very interested in the truck and wants to come see it and no reply as of yet...must not really want to sell if not returning calls is all I can figure! ???
You're lucky.. been hell week for me. Might be the price range i'm stuck looking in too ($500-$700) Maybe sellers in this range are just "special"
I love the way everyone wants you to use CL to email them, you click the link and it pops open Windows Live Mail. Its not my email that I use, so how am I to know if they are actually getting the email or its not sent somewhere into limbo, just floating around somewhere, or being sent to the seller, but also a SPAM Phishing data collector as well? I do know, that soon after I use this crap mailing system, my inbox starts getting junk mail after junkmail. IMO, that is exactly what is happening and that is how CL is able to keep their site open and free to us to use. SPAM data collectors are paying them for the free use of information. While being here, where the US Privacy laws cannot touch a person, I have seen listings on the local sites where they pay you to be a data collector and send out SPAM mail. Thats where you get these "Hello sir, I am in need of your help, I am benefactor to la large inheritance and if you give me your email and bank info, you will get rich" emails. So now, I click the email link, c&p it in my trusted email and send the message through there, so atleast I have a record of it being sent.
There are people who collect email addresses by using Craigslist, then sell the email addresses to marketing companies. Maybe that's what we are seeing...
I think it may have been Fox that posted about allcraigslist. Ive used that to find things outside the San Francisco area. I usually only buy if theres a phone number. Im regestered with craigslist so I never got that Outlook Express thing. Then my putter went into meltdown and now I always get that. Ill ccp the CL address if im really desperate for whatever someones selling. I got a smoking deal on R-12 freon from someone in Sacramento California off the Sacramento craigslist. 15 cans for 100 dollars. I jumped on it. It was a awsome deal. R-12 was banned and is tough to find unless you have a license, which I dont
That's a setting on your computer. Windows live mail is set as your default. My experience has been similar with Craigslist. I've had good luck with putting something in the subject line to get their attention. Like "Have cash want to buy your (item) now" or "Seriously interested in your (item) but have a couple questions". This way they stand out when they get an email. Also I found some people aren't internet savvy and have someone else post the ad for them and then the poster relays the info to the seller which adds a delay in the process. I always include my phone number in the reply to their ad stating to call, email or text. Also many people have jobs which don't allow them to check emails or accept phone calls. So when they get a chance to check their email, they may be overwhelmed with emails and spam. A friend of mine posted a job listing for an electricians helper. He had to take the ad down within an hour of posting it because he got over 100 emails in 45 minutes. There was no way he would have the time to reply to all of them.
Unfortunately that's what you get with an ad forum that's anonymous, free, and pretty much unmoderated. Inaccurate postings, listings of things that are no longer for sale, errors galore, no buyer or seller feedback or protection. You can find some good deals on there, but it's all at your own risk and you gotta check it out on your own. Some people might not be even be serious about selling something, they might just be playing around and see if they get bites to see what something is worth. I think most people on CL are legit but there is still a lot of BS. With Ebay or even the local paper, you've gotta give personal info and pay to post an ad/listing so people are more serious about it.
craigslist hey NY i have bought and sold quite a few cars on craigslist but one mistake i made on the first couple of them is i listed my phone number ,i was called a gazillion times by callers who must not have much to do except call and ask silly questions when they had no intentions of even coming to look. I would recomend to use the email then you can sort out the kooks and who is serious
Man, I got all sorts of idiots who called me about a 1968 Ford truck I once had , I posted on CL. One guy wanted me to go pick him up in Monterey so he could test drive it, I told him off and to lose my number, another came to the house here, we went out for a test drive and midway through the drive he said he really didnt need a truck, he wanted a Honda and he really wasnt a truck guy. One guy came out for a Pontiac I was selling and wanted me to come down in price. I told him no, and he wanted me to introduce him to the people across the street so he could buy the 72 Monaco wagon that was sitting in the driveway. I told him to leave and leave my neighbors alone. I had a 1969 Buick GS 350 convertable , the car was beautiful and it was a runner. I had people coming over to see it, one guy at 12 noon and another at 1 30 , well they both showed up at the same time. Both were gangster hood rats straight out of West Oakland and San Francisco. The first guy got out , he and 3 other guys wanted the car right there without seeing the reciepts or anything I had on it and they other 3 guys I had arranged for later was whipping out 100 dollars bills in my face. One guy offered way over what I was asking , then the other guy offered more. Now the two groups started shouting and fighting on my front yard lawn over whose getting the car. After trying to calm the groups down with no success I saw a knife under a guys shirt and thats when I called the cops and told them they both need to get back in their cars and get the out of here because the police are on the way. NOBODY gets the car. After that I kept it at my mothers house. I ended up selling it on ebay to some guy in Poland. You get alot of nutcases on craigs, but still there are alot of decent people there too.
