Well, there is your problem. Seattle is one city in the Northwest. Unfortunately they ruin it for the rest of us more often than not.

Washington is a great state, mostly rural AG based communities with salt of the earth people.

We have a local contract outfit that handles all of the DMV business. They are generally helpfull and courteous. In Washington a person buying a vehicle from a private party can contest the assumed value of a vehicle with a signed document from the seller. I understand the reasoning behind this. People would come in and state they purchased a vehicle for far less than what they paid to avoid paying taxes on the full amount. (I still think it's absurd that they can tax a private party sale of a rig that has already been taxed when sold new, but I digress)

When I bought my 96 F-350 Powerstroke crew cab they looked the value up on KBB. They of course use the "High end" value, which in my case was almost 9 grand. I got a good deal, and though it is a very clean truck has high miles etc. I paid $5000 for it. I had signed documentation from the seller stating the purchase price. I paid taxes on what I bought it for. I guess they figure if you are willing to jump through there hoops they take your word for it.

The Nebraska DMV will make you pay back taxes unless you have proof it has not been opperated on the public streets since it's last license. So far all I have to do is fill out a form stating the storage. Taxes aren't bad unless you need to retitle or seller discloses the real sale price. It is the Wheel tax that gets me in my home town. One of 3 cities that have a wheel tax in NE. Omaha is the largest and my town of 23,000 is the smallest. However, I have discovered antique plates offered by the State for a one time $78 fee and I avoid any other fees and taxes until I choose to license another way. Antique plates have rules on driving but shake down drives are allowed..

Which City did you go to? I always use Kent, but maybe I need to go somewhere else.

Oh the horror! Now I'm glad I'm in Ca. Either do everything online or make and appointment.

Title transfer $35. Sales tax based on purchase price (7.25% in Kern county). Registration transfer fee $15. My 20 year old car and truck are pretty close. The truck is $90 per year. The car is $80 per year. The 08 Dodge is $165 and decreases every year until the bottom which is $80.

If you are not using the car you can register it non-op for $18...forever. Just pay the reg. fees when you want to put it back on the road.

I don't understand the deal with them making a person pay a fee for a vehicle that is not on the road? I like NY, just turn in your tags and hand them a $1 processing fee. If your registration has not expired, they will refund you a pro-rated amout of the balance that you did not use, ofcourse Albany send you a check, in about 6 months, HAHA. It takes them a good 3-4 months to get around to sending you a title after you transfer the title into your name.

I keep hearing you guys mention, paying a late fee on registration for something that has been off the road for some time, what is up with that? Its not on the dang road, there should be no registration fees due, IT WASN'T BEING USED!

it's all in knowing the tricks to get it done cheeper.

A couple friends of mine and been buying and selling cars here in the PNW for years and after buying a couple abandoned Vehicles off fort Lewis it did not take me long to learn how to get Bills of sale for recent dates.. Parts Vehicles get sold to many owners before they find a permanent Home.
